2
The Leeds experience / neonatal education
  • Leeds had a huge change to neonatal module format
    2 years ago
  • It was a team effort between the University and
the trusts in the West Yorkshire region, included
    Hull and Castle Hill representatives
  • A bid to the confederation secured monies to
enable us to develop a strategy for neonatal
    education in Leeds

3
The changes (old level 2 modules shelved)
  • Neonatal physiology at level 2/3 (10 Credits)
  • Neonatal pathophysiology level 2/3 (10c)
  • Parenting and family dynamics 2/3 (10c)
  • Transition from home to community module at
    level 2/3 (20c)
  • Neonatal and child transport level 3/M (20c)
  • Work based learning 20 credits 2/3

4
Why?
  • A need to streamline delivery and number of
    modules
  • Emphasis on physiology a desire from trusts
  • Needed to develop a degree framework
  • These modules will underpin this development
  • Transition to community was seen as a neglected
    area
  • Enhanced practice to replace R23 Manchester
    programme

5
Developments for degree pathway BSc Neonatal Care
  • 20 credit enhanced practice module
  • 3 occupational standards developed with trust
    representatives
  • Consultant support Dewsbury, Leeds, BRI,
    Huddersfield so far
  • Dr Lawrance Miall on degree planning team with Dr
    Brain Gibbs support

6
Enhanced standards
  • Fluid and nutrition
  • Respiration and ventilation
  • Health assessment and diagnostic reasoning
  • Would like it to be a shared module with other
acute areas, who have own standards (makes
financial sense and would be good to share
    learning)

7
Other developments within school which will
support degree
  • Genetics module in Midwifery 3/M
  • Neonatal developmental care and infant nutrition
some work on this beginning in midwifery
  • Access to child protection module and
    neorosciences (child)
  • Shared pain module
  • I am going on Domestic Violence workshop training
    for community module
  • Currently on taught doctorate at Sheffield

8
Other programmes in school suitable for neonatal
nurses
  • Msc Nursing Practice, I act as mentor and
clinical link for child and neonatal nurses
  • BSc Nursing Practice Child Pathway, a potential
route for child health nurses in neonatal care, I
    am the Child pathway leader

9
Student experience on WBL and 3 theory theory
modules
  • One day a week release
  • Working mostly in own work base
  • Mondays 1pm 7pm
  • Evening slot has picked up stand alone students
    and numbers have increased
  • WBL means the student takes control of learning
(some embrace it, others are encouraged to !)

10
Student experience
  • Are beginning to embrace philosophy of WBL as
    more nurses go through it
  • Units are getting former WBL students to buddy or
    mentor if appropriate
  • This group have already organised own learning
sets and have taught each other
  • Need to think how we can help students with
different learning experiences to adapt to this
    mode of learning

11
My relationships with major trusts
  • Visit all students in clinical area at least once
    a semester
  • Get to meet mentors on site
  • Invite mentors to assessor workshop in first
semester to discuss their role in WBL and offers
    group support
  • Involved in bench marking
  • Chair of YNNG

12
Collegiate relationships
  • Been in post 10 years now!
  • Feel comfortable visiting units, always made
    welcome
  • Meet regularly with clinical educator in Leeds,
    academic mentor
  • Meet with modern matron and unit senior staff
    regularly to keep updated
  • Support our developements

13
Recent developments in pre reg Child worth sharing
  • First year students on Pre Reg Child Branch at
end of CFP now access SCBU, Community, PN and TC
    at Leeds and SJUH
  • WBL module work in close liaison with clinical
educator Gwynnn Bissell and staff in home
    nursery, TC and PN
  • Student ward based objectives worked out with GB
and LC, students appreciate our close working
    relationship (sometimes!)
  • Have clinical forum days throughout placement and
students present work at end to clinical and
    university staff
  • Staff and students have so far evaluated
    experiences well
  • Students return at end of year 3 for critical
    care experience
  • Might even get some neonatal nurse out of them in
    the future!
  • Perhaps other units could approach their
    university?

14
The new clinical education structure in Yorkshire
region
  • This has benefited me as I have named individuals
    to liase with
  • It is good to share neonatal educational needs
with clinicians who are focused on teaching and
    learning
  • Students are sometimes surprised to see how
    closely we work together
  • Why is that?
  • How can our liaison roles be further developed?
  • Is joint research a way forward?
