Reasons why it is important to be able to use
student information more efficiently
  • No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education
    Improvement Act (IDEA) 2004
  • Need to make good data-based decisions at the
    national, state, school district, school,
    classroom, and child levels

Data Collection
  • Data have been collected and submitted to the
    federal government for students receiving special
    education support services since 1976.
  • TN data collection system
  • 1970s - paper reports
  • 1980s - computer database reports
  • 2003 - web-server database reports
  • 2004 - Statewide Student Management System

  • No other state has come so far in the endeavor to
    create a statewide student information system

Statewide Student Management System (SSMS)
  • Two components
  • Star_Student (Century Consultants, Ltd.) is the
    general attendance and student information
    management component
  • EasyIEP (Public Consulting Group, Inc.) is the
    special education student information management
    component

  • As a component of EasyIEP
  • Manual Entry
  • Importing Still in testing (larger schools)

For SSMS Districts (EasyIEP)
  • Enroll all students including the ones you
    havent enrolled in your Attendance program in
    the past
  • Special Ed pre-kindergarten
  • Headstart students receiving SPED services
  • Private Home schooled students receiving SPED
    services
  • Homebound students

  • Pre-Defined Reports
  • Ad-Hoc Report Wizard
  • Discoverer (Ad-Hoc) for Oracle

For SSMS Districts (EasyIEP)
  • Special Education Reports that must be produced
    in Star Student
  • ADM by Option of Service Report
  • Special Education Discipline Report
    (Suspension/Expulsion/Removals)

For EasyCENSUS Districts
  • ADM by Option of Service Report will be produced
    in EasyCENSUS and submitted to the person in your
    district who keys it in to the ADM reporting site
  • Tables 1 and 3 have been submitted to OSEP for
    the December 1 count

My Suggestions...
  • SPED and Regular Ed must do more to understand
    how data is gathered and shared with
    SDE/OSEP/EDEN
  • Establish a new set of information sharing
    routines
  • Cooperate
  • Cross-train (krĂ´stran , kros-)v.
    cross-trained, cross-training, cross-trains
    v. intr.
  • To undergo or provide training in different tasks
    or skills The department has cross-trained in
    firefighting and emergency medical services.
  • To train in different sports, mainly by
    alternating regimens, as in running, bicycling,
    and swimming.
