Community Corrections
  • The sub-field of corrections in which offenders
are supervised and provided services outside jail

6
Probation
  • A sentence in which the offender, rather than
being incarcerated, is retained in the community
under the supervision of a probation agency and
required to abide by certain rules and conditions
    to avoid incarceration.

7
Pre-sentence Investigation (PSI)
  • An investigation conducted by a probation agency
into the past behavior, family circumstances and

a crime, to assist the court in determining the
    most appropriate sentence.

Diversion
  • Organized, systematic efforts to remove
individuals from further processing in criminal
justice by placing them in alternative programs
diversion may be pre-trial or post-trial.

9
Restitution
  • Money paid or services provided to victims, their
survivors, or to the community by a convicted
offender to make up for the injury inflicted.

10
Day Fines
  • Fines geared to the average daily income of the
convicted offender in an effort to bring equity
    to the sentencing process.

11
Reintegration
  • Offenders maintain community ties and are
reoriented toward a more productive life while
    avoiding the pains of prison.

12
Revoked
  • Probation contract is terminated and the original
    sentence is enforced.

13
Day Fees
  • A form of fee on probationers to defray the cost
of community corrections. Usually one to three
    days pay.

14
Probation Conditions
  • Rules that specify what an offender is and is not
to do during the course of a probation sentence.

15
Revocation
  • The repeal of a probation sentence or parole, and
substitution of a more restrictive sentence,
because of violation or probation or parole
    conditions.

16
Fines

intermediate punishment for their criminal acts.

17
Technical Violations
  • Failure to abide by the technical rules or
conditions of probation or parole, as distinct
