13Whats changed for us?
- Time of start/finish we knew we wanted to start
and finish earlier to allow us to offer better
extra-curricular events after school - Consultation with students, staff, parents/carers
and the community - We adapted their views and started in September
with 830am start, 250pm finish - Split lunches allowed longer coaching time three
days per week

17Whats changed for us?
- Length of lesson building is designed in PODS
(subject based) which means that we can have
longer blocks of learning. Each pod has its own
staircase and entrance self-contained. - Longer blocks will start in September 2009 for
KS4 (three hours, two hours) to aid deeper
learning and engagement. - Consultation with students, staff,
parents/carers

20Whats changed for us?
- Lunchtimes we knew the building would seat 300
in dining hall at one time (largest in Leeds) - Consultation with students, staff, parents/carers
about CASHLESS CATERING - Split lunches of 30 mins each half of school
are on lunch, the other half in coaching groups,
on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday - Monday Friday 45 mins lunch for all school
together, followed by 15 mins
21- Much faster for serving
- Used to sell 2000 meals per month is now 18,600
per month - Reval machines switched on at 700am to allow
top-up
22Lunchtime in the pods a great social space with
students able to stay inside in the previous
building, all students were sent outside every
break and lunchtime
23Whats changed for us?
- Coaching groups we wanted to do more effective
assertive mentoring with our students, to discuss
their 0/1/2 progress and to touch base - Consultation with students, staff, parents/carers
about COACHING GROUP candidates 18 per group - Coaching programme created which sets out the
themes for the week, and provides colleagues with
their packs of work for students - Not all coaches are teachers
24Activities in coaching groups
Assembly theme
25Whats changed for us?
- Registration systems we wanted to streamline the
information systems and to be able to react much
more quickly to truancy - Consultation with students, staff, parents/carers
about e-registration and TruancyCall - Every single teacher and coach uses
e-registration (from SIMS.net) - We have also linked it to our 0/1/2 achievement
monitoring system. Admin Curriculum altogether
at last.
26Every member of teaching staff and every coach
has a light laptop to do e-registration. Docking
stations are used to link the laptop to the IWB
and speakers in every teaching space (except
breakouts)
27Whats changed for us?
- Teaching spaces we wanted to create more
flexible use of space - BENDY WALLS in every layer of every pod mean that
60 students can be taught at once - Breakout spaces fitted with comfy cubes and
tables used for learning and for social time - Consultation with students, staff, parents/carers
about furniture, fittings, equipment and layout

44Whats made it work for us?
- Regular consultation and feedback e.g. what do
we/dont we want to see in our new building to
students, staff, parents/carers, governors. - Engagement by the contractors e.g. assemblies led
by the builders, vision panels in the fences,
prizes on sports day, Year 8 DT project building
our own cranes. - Frequent meetings on FFE e.g. how do you want
your room laid out, where do you want the floor
boxes, where should the water be?

50Ten top ICT tips for staying sane
- Consult with teaching and non-teaching staff
about what they want ICT to do/be - Check on the level of skills (audit and then
audit again) - Plan and then plan a contingency if Plan A
doesnt work as effectively as you want - Make sure you know the contract backwards
- Delegate someone in the school to be the main
problem-solver for ICT
51Ten top ICT tips for staying sane
- 6. Take staff and student feedback early on so
you can fix any problems quickly - 7. Manage expectations as best you can be
honest but positive, every single day to everyone - 8. Drip-feed the developments, dont overwhelm
staff with more fast change - 9. Keep researching for newer, better, cheaper,
faster products, right up to day 1 - 10. Celebrate the successes when they happen
its a massive project and you should be proud of
it.
