CDW for South Asian Communities
  • Funded through the HoBtPCT
  • Work with the South Asian communities within the
    Heart of Birmingham
  • Based at Nissa Ashram part of Ashram Housing
    Association
  • The Department of Health has set a target of
    employing 500 CDW nationally, (54 regional and 6
    Local) in 2007 following recommendations as set
    out in the following documents

  • Raise awareness about mental health needs within
    the South Asian community

Aims Objectives
  • Working in partnership with both primary and
    secondary mental health service, particularly
    working with care co-ordinators in line with care
    programme approach.
  • Working to ensure full participation and greater
    ownership in the development of effective health
    and social care with the targeted communities.
  • Establishing direct links with local ward forums
    and profiling the needs with mental health from
    South Asian ethnic minority communities.
  • Providing a culturally sensitive service by
    giving practical information and advice to these
    communities which may include signposting.

  • Supporting South Asian women to connect with
    local communities.
  • Fostering links between hard to reach
    communities, GP practices and mental health
    services.
  • Building on the inherent strengths and capacity
    of minority ethnic groups in dealing with mental
    health issues within the communities themselves.
  • Developing initiatives to raise awareness amongst
    hidden cases of mental ill health.
  • Working with partner agencies including statutory
    sector, community groups, faith organisations,
    voluntary organisation and public and patient
    forums.

Heart of Birmingham SouthAsian Communities Forum
  • The partnership of mental health professionals,
    service users, carers, community based
    organisations has been bought together to address
    the needs of South Asian communities in the Heart
    of Birmingham area in relation to mental ill
    health.

Aims Objectives
  • Look to identify new initiatives to deliver
    services in accordance to the needs of South
    Asian communities in relation to mental health.
  • The forum will work to develop services that are
    sensitive to the cultural, psychological and
    emotional needs of people within South Asian
    communities.
  • Empowering individuals affected by mental ill
    health, including service users, carers and
    family members.
  • Empowering South Asian communities to take
    ownership of their own well being.
  • The forum will work in partnership to positively
    promote mental health.
  • The forum will work in partnership with the
    HoBtPCT and other statutory organisation to
    promote mental health.
