Where do Virtual Learning Environments and
Library systems really overlap?
  • WebCT classifies resources by purpose
  • course, lecture, date (of use), topic
  • some resources created for a teaching purpose
  • Unicorn classifies resources by content
  • author, title, subject, date (of creation)
  • Reading lists!
  • This is the focus of Project DELIVER

3
Guiding premises
  • A broader interpretation than traditional
reading lists any citeable resource eg
    e-journals website
  • Reading list compilers are an important group of
    users
  • So too are Library back-office staff
    (acquisitions, etc)
  • Involves cultural organisational change (as
    well as the technical sort)
  • Solutions to be implemented by LSE and De
    Montfort University
  • Experience to be documented for use by the wider
    community

4
Structure of DELIVER
5
Outcomes for LSE

    local/external resources

  • Links to appropriate copy for user and location
  • Resolves problem of changing URLs
  • Reading List Management system
  • Streamline RL production, download bibliographic
    data
  • Provide list for students in lecturers preferred
    format/order
  • Allow lecturers to send order requests direct to
    Library
  • Provide management information so Library can
    respond quickly to demand

6

  • (using LSE course and library information)
  • Compilers view adding an item to a course list
  • Students view finding the item in the Library,
