Grace in Service

TEXT Luke 1030-37
  • The teaching of the Lord Jesus Christ about
giving (stewardship) is an important lesson in
the contrast between Law and Grace. In the story
of the Good Samaritan there are three
    philosophies about giving

3
I. Beat him up!or what is thine is mine, Ill
take it!
  • A. Obviously, we dont go out as the thieves did
and attack people and take their money.
  • B. This philosophy, however, has a secondary
manifestation and we use the concept often in
slangIll beat him out of it!

4
  • 1. Many of us, even as Christians, do not accept
the fact that Biblical principles of stewardship
    apply to our business dealings.
  • a. Gods Word teaches us that they do Rom 1217
  • b. Overcome evil with good Rom 1221
  • 2. So the concept of beat him out of it is
    wrong.

5
II. Pass him up!or, What is mine is mine, Ill
keep it!
  • A. This philosophy is very easy to adopt. After
all, it is our money, isnt it? And when we come
to church and put money in the offering were
giving God some of our money, arent we?
  • B. What does Gods Word say?
  • 1. Gods Word says we are stewards (I Pet 410).
In the Grecian home there were three slaves
    honored with high responsibility

6
  • a. paidagwgos/paidagogos (Pedagogy/teaching)(Gal
324-25)a slave charged with training and
discipline of his masters children. Thus the
knowledge he had been entrusted with he was
required to use as a good steward.

7
  • b. episkopos/episcopos (episcopal/overseer/oversi
    ght/ manager)(Matt 208 Gal 42 Titus 17)a
slave charged with managing all working affairs
of his masters estatea supervisor of the
personnel of his master, an overseer.

8
  • c. oikonomia /oikonomia (economy/house
rule)(Luke 162-4)a slave charged with handling
his masters moneythis is the word used in I
    Peter 410!

9
III. Take him up!or, what is mine is thine,
Ill give it
  • The teaching of Gods Word indicates then, that
God has entrusted us with material things for
    certain reasons. They are

10
  • A. In order to provide for the needs of
ourselves and our family (I Tim 58)
  • B. In order to provide for the poor (James
215-16), particularly those of the household of
    faith (Gal 610).
  • C. In order to provide for Gods work (I Cor
    162)
  • D. In order to provide for those engaged in
    Gods service (Luke 107 3 John 5-8)

11
  • How much does God expect us to give? Who do we
choose to give to? How do we determine the right
amount? These questions we will answer next
    week.
  • The important concept for us to remember first is
that the Lord Jesus taught that our philosophy
    should not be
  • Beat him up!
  • it should not be
  • Pass him up!
  • it should be

12
  • Take him up!what is mine is thine, Ill give it!
because what is mine is not mine, it is the
    Masters.
