Title: Mark 10:35-45
1Mark 1035-45
Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to
him. "Teacher," they said, "we want you to do for
us whatever we ask." "What do you want me to do
for you?" he asked. They replied, "Let one of
us sit at your right and the other at your left
in your glory." "You don't know what you are
asking," Jesus said. "Can you drink the cup I
drink or be baptized with the baptism I am
baptized with?" "We can," they answered.
Jesus said to them, "You will drink the cup I
drink and be baptized with the baptism I am
baptized with, but to sit at my right or left is
not for me to grant. These places belong to those
for whom they have been prepared." When the ten
heard about this, they became indignant with
James and John. Jesus called them together and
said, "You know that those who are regarded as
rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and
their high officials exercise authority over
them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to
become great among you must be your servant and
whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.
For even the Son of Man did not come to be
served, but to serve and to give his life as a
ransom for many."

3The measure of a man is not how many servants he
has, but how many men he serves. Dwight Moody

5Matthew 728-29
When Jesus had finished saying these things, the
crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he
taught as one who had authority, and not as their
teachers of the law.
6 What leadership is not
7 1 The worlds view of leadership, is not Jesus
definition (vs. 42)
8Galatians 211-12
When Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his
face, because he was clearly in the wrong. Before
certain men came from James, he used to eat with
the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to
draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles
because he was afraid of those who belonged to
the circumcision group.
9Its about living for others, not yourself.
Matthew 1624-25 - Then Jesus said to his
disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he
must deny himself and take up his cross and
follow me. For whoever wants to save his life
will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me
will find it. Luke 946-48 - An argument started
among the disciples as to which of them would be
the greatest. Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took
a little child and had him stand beside him. Then
he said to them, "Whoever welcomes this little
child in my name welcomes me and whoever
welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For he
who is least among you allhe is the greatest
10John 1220-26 - Now there were some Greeks among
those who went up to worship at the Feast. They
came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in
Galilee, with a request. "Sir," they said, "we
would like to see Jesus." Philip went to tell
Andrew Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.
Jesus replied, "The hour has come for the Son of
Man to be glorified. I tell you the truth, unless
a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies,
it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it
produces many seeds. The man who loves his life
will lose it, while the man who hates his life in
this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever
serves me must follow me and where I am, my
servant also will be. My Father will honor the
one who serves me.
11 2 Service is the measure of Christian leadership
(vv. 43-44)
12Matthew 2521
Well done my good and faithful servant
13 3 Servant leadership is modeled after Jesus
behavior (vs. 45)
14Six points of servant leadership
Servants lead out of relationships not
coercion. Servants lead by support, not by
control Servants lead by developing others, not
by doing all the ministry themselves Servants
guide people, not drive them Servants lead from
love, not domination Servants seek growth, not
position
15Will you strive to serve others?
