• Tells me something that could hurt him or her.
• Tells me something that could hurt someone else.

• Your parents once were your age
• They love you
• Might be too embarrassed
• Ways that might make it easier to talk

Ways to Talk to Parents

• Convenient time
• Get comfortable talking
• Get to know your parents
• Talk about what you have done together
• Ask what it was like when they were growing up.

Ineffective Refusal Skills

• Avoid eye contact and look down
• Shuffle your feet and back up
• Stand with a slumped posture and wring your hands
• Use a soft, uncertain voice
• Never use the word no as you refuse

How to Refuse Refusal Strategies

• Maintain eye contact.
• Stand up straight and strong.
• Hold your ground.
• Speak firmly and clearly.
• Use the word no.

• Say a direct no.
• Repeat the refusal over over
• Suggest another activity.
• Say why not by giving an opinion or a reason.
• Walk away.

Identifying Trouble

• Ask questions.
• Name the trouble.
• State the consequences.
• Suggest an alternative.
• Move it, sell it, and leave the door open.
