3 Sikkim University established by an act of
Parliament of India in July 2007. It is the
23rd Federal University Fully funded by the
Federal Government Fulfilled a long cherished
aspiration of the people of the entire Eastern
Himalayas to have a higher institution of
learning of international standard

5Located at a peaceful, accessible and naturally
magnificent surrounding with tremendous
geo-strategic significance China on the North,
Bangladesh on the South, Bhutan on the East and
Nepal on the West University expects to attract
students and faculty members from both within
India and outside. Catchment areas are
immediate neighbouring countries including
Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Myanmar, Thailand and
Nepal.
6Our Mission University is being designed in
such a way so as to make it known for academic
excellence and research, for its all inclusive
institutional character and a strong
instrument of regional development and cross
border integration.
7 University is trying to bring in the best
practices of academic programmes, teaching
methods and curriculum designing both from
within and outside India. University is also
planning to build infrastructures that are
friendly to the fabulous and unparallel
environmental settings of Sikkim and the
neighbouring regions.
8We have just revamped the entire undergraduate
programmes Our curriculum is now
inter-disciplinary and students have facilities
to have cross-discipline subject/course choices.
Fortunate to garner the support of the heads
of the Departments and Principals of the best
colleges and Universities in India. However,
our core focus is the graduate and research
programmes.
9Sikkim University will have three distinctly
broad interdisciplinary academic programmes
Traditional Programmes, Non-traditional
Programmes and Policy Studies Programmes.
Traditional Programmes 12 schools and over
45 Departments/Centres including Schools of
Social Sciences Law and Governance

Programme Open-ended Inter-disciplinary
approach Other Schools in Sikkim University both
from traditional and non-traditional programmes
will have significant segments on global studies
programme Draw extensively from these
programmes Since this is a very formative
stage Scope and space for designing this
programme ample We are consulting with a
number of Universities in India and abroad We
are open to collaborative projects including
course designs and faculty exchange
14Third Segment School of Policy Studies Policy
research that will cater to larger issues of
national interest and are directly relevant to
the management of regional and local issues
including in the arena of public affairs,
livelihood, indigenous people and natural
resources. Sikkim University has been given 300
acres of land

20Sikkim University is Starting some of its
teaching programmes from the Monsoon 2008.
Sikkim University is also keen to develop
partnership with other Universities, and private
organisations for access to academic,
financial and physical resources.
