What are they?

• Multiple meaning words are words that have
  several meanings depending on how they are used
  in a sentence.

• The multiple meaning words we will study have
• one spelling
• one pronunciation
• two or more unrelated meanings

What are they?

• Words like these are called homonyms and
  polysemesWOW!
• The most important thing you NEED to remember...
  is that many words have multiple meanings and it
  is important to make sure you are attaching the
  correct meaning to a word when you read.

• We went to the lake to fish and to have a picnic.
• What does fish mean?

Nouns and Verbs

• Often words that have multiple meanings can be
  divided into two categoriesnouns and verbs.
• It will help if you ask yourself
• Is this naming a person, place, or thing? (a
  noun)
• Does this word tell about something you do- an
  action? (a verb)

Things to remember...

• Use the context clues in the sentence to help you
  figure out the meaning.
• Try to determine if the word is used as a noun or
  a verb.
• Use a dictionary to decide on the meaning.

• Sometimes you will read something and have to
  figure out what a word means.
• Youll use the dictionary and it will give you
  several meanings for the word when it is used as
  a verb or when it is used as a noun
• Then youll have to decide based on context what
  the best meaning is...
