Title: Delineators provide guidance to a driver'

1
Delineators
  • Delineators provide guidance to a driver.
  • Youll learn the standards for the design, color,
and placement of delineators in this chapter.

2
CHAPTER 11 OBJECTIVES
  • You will be able to perform the following tasks
    after finishing this chapter
  • identify different types of delineators
  • describe the composition and placement of the
    delineators

3
GUARDRAIL DELINEATION
  • Current delineation shall be installed on all
new, repaired, and relocated guardrail and
    terminals.

4
GUARDRAIL DELINEATION(LONGITUDINAL RUNS)
  • A delineator must
  • be made of plastic
  • be flexible in order to recover from impact
  • have a minimum reflective area of 7 square
    inches
  • project no more than 5 inches above the post or
    blockout
  • use prismatic lens sheeting

5
GUARDRAIL DELINEATION(LONGITUDINAL RUNS)
  • A delineator also must
  • be mounted on the web on top of steel guardrail
    blockouts
  • be mounted on the web on top of the post if no
    blockout is used
  • be installed on top of wood blockouts by adhesive
or by either stainless or galvanized screws

6
GUARDRAIL DELINEATION(LONGITUDINAL RUNS)
  • Additionally, a delineator must
  • be installed at the specified spacing
typically, a maximum of 80 feet on centers
  • reduce the spacing on curves to comply with the
spacings specified for Interstate road edge
    delineators
  • be placed to include at least one delineator
upstream and one downstream of a guardrail
    repair
  • match the color of the roadway edgelines

7
GUARDRAIL DELINEATION(TERMINALS)
  • Install yellow reflective sheeting (minimum size
8" by 36") on buffered end sections.

8
GUARDRAIL DELINEATION(TERMINALS)
  • Install yellow reflective sheeting with black
diagonal stripes on an impact head. The sheeting
must cover the full area inside the end of the
    head.
  • Place the sheeting so that the stripes point down
    towards the roadway.

9
GUARDRAIL DELINEATION(TERMINALS)
  • Experience has shown that many terminals with
protruding impact heads are damaged during snow
    removal operations.
  • A delineator tube that extends well above the
top of the terminal can be attached to the
    terminal in
  • order to mark the inside head for plow
operators. Attach the tube directly to the side
of the head that is closest to the roadway.
  • Do not place delineator posts in front of
    terminals.

10
SUMMARYDELINEATION
  • Delineation provides positive guidance to driver
  • Apply delineation to terminal and standard
section according to VDOT Road and Bridge
    Standards and Specifications

5 SELF-CHECK QUESTIONS
  • 1. Delineators are made out of _____ for maximum
    _____ when hit.
  • 2. Describe the delineators used on impact heads.
What kind of material is used? What color(s)
    are used?
  • 3. The black _____ stripes on an impact head
delineator point _____ to the road.

12
ANSWERS
  • 1. Delineators are made out of plastic for
    maximum flexibility when hit.
  • 2. Describe the delineators used on impact heads.
What kind of material is used?
  • VDOT approved delineators used on impact heads
    are made of reflective sheeting.
  • What color(s) are used?
  • The colors are yellow with black diagonal
    stripes.
  • 3. The black diagonal stripes on an impact head
delineator point down to the road.

5 SELF-CHECK QUESTIONS(cont.)
  • 4. Describe the delineators used on buffered end
    sections.
  • What kind of material is used?
  • What color(s) are used?
  • 5. What color is used for delineators mounted on
    the guardrail?

14
ANSWERS
  • 4. Describe the delineators used on buffered end
    sections.
  • What kind of material is used?
  • The delineators used on buffered end sections
are also made of reflective sheeting.
  • What color(s) are used?
  • They are yellow.
  • 5. What color is used for delineators mounted on
    the guardrail?
  • The delineator color matches the color of the
    roadway edgelines.
