Title: RSVP Beam Development Plan (BDP)

1
RSVP Beam Development Plan (BDP)
  • Status
  • 2Dec04 Thursday meeting
  • ahrens

2
Summary of todays update
  • November 04 Plan The Old Plan
  • Boundary conditions
  • Beam time requirements
  • Weaknesses and strengths
  • The Next Iteration Present Thinking
  • Changes in boundary conditions
  • Resulting dependencies -gt redo to come

3
BDP.4 (the old plan)
  • 4 years of beam development
  • Extraction work planned every year
  • Intensity work (low duty cycle) planned every
    year
  • All final hardware available by third year

4
BDP.4 (old plan) Beam Time Estimates
  • First two years 10 calendar weeks/year
  • Last two years 30 calendar weeks/year
  • Some numbers details
  • 80 hr/week i.e. behind RHIC
  • 1 hr an hour of working time, 24/7
  • Final estimate included Meco and Kopio estimates
for beam line / experiment setup time
  • which accounts for half of time for the last two
    years

5
BDP.4 Weaknesses too expensive, but also
  • Early intensity development activation of areas
    to be reworked shortly
  • AGS extraction
  • low duty cycle approach required but not a
proven way to deliver improved intensity setup
  • Activation issues will over-constrain behavior
  • Staffing
  • Early years 24/7 not likely, no other user
  • Early years - RHIC activities will compete too
    well

6
BDP.4 Strengths
  • Progress possible early on on time structure
    issues using very low intensity
  • MECO 7.5 GeV/c extraction and mini bunching non
    closed issues
  • KOPIO maybe know enough (?)
  • Progress possible on a subset of intensity issues
  • Booster injection losses

7
The Next Iteration Revisiting the Plan
  • Drop first two years, but plan for three years of
    development/commissioning
  • High intensity extraction equipment available
    year one
  • High intensity diagnostic equipment will be more
    available
  • Booster loss monitors ...

8
Revisiting the Plan (cont.)
  • Coarse time evolution of BDP is unchanged
  • For intensity work, beam dumping assumed via 8
    GeV extraction
  • MECO extraction issues ready for attack
  • KOPIO issues when 25 MHz cavity is available
  • Mix of possible activities make 24/7 more
    plausible
  • Provided the corresponding mix of people is
    available
  • Activities? No surprises Intensity, MECO
    extraction, KOPIO extraction

9
Dependencies - intensity
  • Low intensity work (2e11)
  • Nothing
  • Modest intensity work (1e12)
  • AGS extraction equipment upgrade
  • External beam dump
  • Booster loss monitor system rebuild
  • Booster C3 protection
  • Caps

10
Dependencies intensity
  • High intensity 10e12 protons
  • Booster injection area rework C5,C6,C7
  • RHIC required magnets upgraded or spares ready
    F6 septum, F3, A5 kickers

11
Dependencies MECO
  • Meco Extraction
  • Time-structure-instrumented beam line
  • Modest intensity
  • New 8 GeV extraction gear
  • Beam dump

12
Dependencies KOPIO
  • Kopio extraction
  • 25MHz cavity
  • 24GeV extraction line
  • Time-structure-instrumented beam line
  • For modest intensity dump
