• Born in 106 B.C. Died in 48 B.C.
• Fathers name- Gnaeus Pompeius Strabo
• Pompeys Spouse- Julia Caesar
• Married to Pompey in 60 B.C. She died in 54
  B.C.

• Elected consul in 70 B.C.
• Roman soldier, and general
• Fought in Social War, Servile War, and The Third
  Mithridatic War

Social War (90-88 B.C)

• Gaius Marius and Lucius Cornelius Sulla in war
  against Rome
• Wanted to destroy Rome and start a new power with
  a similar constitution to Rome
• Pompeys legions destroyed remnants of enemy in
  Africa, Sicily, and Spain after war

Third Servile War (73-71 B.C.)

• Gladiator revolt started by Spartacus
• Got thousands of escaped slaves as troops
• Spartacus killed in battle at end of war
• Rest of Spartacuss troops fled north and
  Pompeys army killed them

Third Mithridatic War (?-73B.C)

• Mithradates VI Eupator
• Rules kingdom called Pontus
• Territory called Bithynia
• Both Rome and Pontus want it
• They go to war
• 73 B.C.- Lucius Licinius Lucullus, Roman general,
  defeats Mithradatess armies
• 66 B.C.- Pompey defeats Mithradates annexes his
  territory

• Cleared Mediterranean of pirates
• Conquered the king of Armenia
• Conquered Tigranes the Great
• Annexed his territory
• Returned to Rome and asked Senate to give some of
  the territories to his ex-soldiers (They said no)
• Pompey turned away from Senate and formed
  alliance with Crassus and Caesar

First Triumvirate

• Crassus, Pompey, and Caesar
• Spoke against the Senate
• Julia was given in marriage to Pompey
• Julia died in 54, Crassus murdered next year
• Senate wanted to relieve Caesar of command
• Said he would if Pompey did too
• Senate insisted on only Caesar resigning
• Pompey saw Caesar losing power, turned back to
  Senate
• Pompey and Caesar became enemies

Crossing the Rubicon

• Pompey now in control of Senate armies
• Caesars armies in Gaul
• Caesars armies could not legally cross the
  Rubicon River separating Rome and Gaul
• Caesar did, starting a civil war between Pompey
  and Caesar

Pompeys Last Battle

• Pompey fought Caesar in Rome
• Withdrew troops to Greece
• Meanwhile, Caesar became dictator of Rome
• Then pursued Pompey to Greece
• Fought Pompey in the Battle of Pharsalus
• Caesar defeated Pompey

Pompeys Death

• After defeat at Pharsalus, Pompey fled to Egypt
  hoping Egyptians would side with him
• Egyptian king didnt want to get involved
• Sent commander in chief to collect Pompey
• Commander in chief killed Pompey on September 28,
  48 B.C.
