• Alaska Heritage Resources Survey (AHRS) database

Alaska Heritage Resources Survey (AHRS)

• The States official inventory of all reported
  historic and prehistoric sites within Alaska
• Includes objects, structures, buildings, sites,
  districts, and travel ways, with a general
  provision that they are over 50 years old
• To date, over 22,000 sites have been reported
  within Alaska
• Fundamental use is to protect cultural resources
  from unwanted destruction

AHRS, continued

• Coastal Districts (and their respective
  communities) may receive approval from OHA to
  access this database
• Backlog of cultural resource reports that need to
  be entered or updated in the AHRS database

• Primary Objective
• Increase cultural resources knowledge base within
  Southeast Alaska

Methods

• Identify recorded sites in AHRS database
• Review cultural resources reports in backlog
  files
• Update/edit/review/create AHRS records
• Map records on USGS maps and electronic AHRSLE
  database

Results

• Over 500 AHRS records were edited
• Records electronically mapped in AHRSLE
• AHRS database is more complete and accurate
• Creates a more streamlined system for project
  review
