PHYS 2101
Fall 2009
Required Text Fundamentals of Physics, by
Halliday, Resnick, and Walker, custom 8th ed.
The custom edition only contains material
relevant to Physics 1100 and 2101. However, it
comes bundled with a WebAssign access code, which
you will need for the homework assignments. You
can also use the regular edition, which contains
all the chapters needed for Physics 2101 and
2102, but the regular edition does not come with
WebAssign access, which you will need to purchase
separately.
  • Course
  • This course begins with a review of chapters 1
6 in the first two weeks of class. It is
expected that you understand the first six
chapters of the textbook prior to your enrolling
in PHYS 2101. As a result, the pace of the
    review will be intense.
  • After the first two weeks the course assumes a
more normal pace and will cover most of the
section contained in chapters 7 20, with the
exception of chapters 17, which will be skipped.
The specific sections covered are outlined in the
    syllabus.
  • You are expected to have read the material in the
    book before coming to class.

  • Exams
  • The first exam will consist entirely of
    multiple-choice questions. The three regular
exams will contain a combination of multiple
choice questions and word problems for which you
    must show your work.
  • A formula sheet will be provided and no other
material is to be used during the exam. Notes,
books, and crib sheets are strictly forbidden.
Formula sheets will be posted in advance of the
    exams.
  • You will need a scientific calculator graphic
calculators are fine, but not necessary. No
computers, beepers, pagers, cellular phones or
other communication devices are allowed. You may
not use the calculator within one of these
    devices.

  • Homework
  • Homework assignments will be online at
    WebAssign.com
  • (Section 1 KEY lsu 7710 2743) (Section 2 KEY
    lsu 9450 0455)
  • The due date for each assignment is listed on
WebAssign and on the course calendar (which is
    posted on the website).
  • Complete problem set solutions will not be
posted. It is your responsibility to make sure
you find out how to solve the problems on each
    assignment.
  • It is essential that you solve the homework
problems to ensure that you understand the
concepts and to strengthen your math skills.
Though you may be able to find solutions for the
homework problems, using them will NOT help you
    prepare for the exams.
  • YOU CANNOT PASS THIS COURSE WITHOUT WORKING THE
HOMEWORK. The homework provides the practice you
will need to be able to solve the problems on the
    exams.

Grading Review Exam 50 pts. Three regular
exams 100 pts. each Final Exam 200 pts. Your
final grade will be based on 550 total
points. A 550-495 pts B 494-440 pts
C 439-330 pts D 329-275 pts F 274-0
pts If your point total is within these ranges,
you are guaranteed the associated letter grade.
In general, there will be no curving of
individual exam grades. It is theoretically
possible for everyone in the class to get an A
(or an F). Your performance depends only on how
you do, not on how everyone else in the class
does. In the end, the grade you earn will be
based on your performance, not you.

either through E-mail or over the phone. If you
have a question about your grade, come see me in
person.
