Title: Task Force on OCLCs Role in Staff Development

1
Task Force on OCLCs Role in Staff Development
  • An Interim Report
  • February 10, 2003

2
Premise of discussion
  • Given its vision to be the leading global library
cooperative, OCLCs role is to leverage the
    cooperative and facilitate collaboration to
strengthen the library community through staff
    development

3
What weve been doing
  • Meetings at Members Council meetings
  • Meetings at ALA annual and midwinter
  • Way too many conference calls
  • Advising on Outsell survey, reviewing the results
  • Gathering information
  • October Members Council meeting input analysis

4
What you told us in October
  • Staff development that would help strengthen the
    library community
  • Digital issues
  • Standards/Technical
  • Clearinghouse on training
  • Best Practices
  • OCLC products and services

5
And you told us
  • Activities most critical in achieving the global
    cooperative
  • Technical/standards
  • Clearinghouse on training
  • Digital issues
  • Best practices
  • Job exchange/shadowing/mentoring

6
You also saw
  • OCLC the preferred provider for a clearinghouse
on training and OCLC products training
  • OCLC collaborating with Networks and professional
associations for training on Digital Issues,
Technical and Standards issues, and, perhaps,
    certification modules
  • Multi-format or modular training recommended,
some interest in new training models, CEU credits

7
We concluded
  • Correlating those types of training that would
help strengthen the library community with those
most critical in achieving the global
    cooperative, three areas emerge
  • Digital issues
  • Standards/Technical
  • Clearinghouse on training

8
The Outsell Survey
  • This survey focused on online training, and
analyzed the results in the context of those who
    planned to use web-based training
  • 2,112 responses, 32 from outside the United
    States
  • Both consumers and influencers responded

9
Outsells conclusions
  • Greatest categories of training needs
  • Library Standards and Practices
  • Management Skills
  • Computing/Information Technology
  • Critical training needs currently unavailable
  • Creating/organizing a digital library
  • Collection development and management
  • Management of change and innovation
  • Library automation

10
Survey available on OCLC website
  • A few results I found interesting
  • Slightly less than ½ of those surveyed intended
to use web-based training in the next twelve
    months
  • Influencers are more open to web-based training
    than consumers
  • The average operating budget is significantly
greater for influencers who plan on using
    web-based training
  • Libraries expect no change or a decrease in
training budgets for the next 12 months, but see
increases more likely in the next 3 years

11
General principles of Task Force report
  • Leverage the cooperative
  • Collaborate with existing providers
  • Avoid redundancy and competition
  • Pursue a modular, multi-format approach
  • Internationalize at every opportunity
  • Recognize need for investment
  • Find ways to identify outcomes and ensure
    standards

12
Three specific areas for attention by OCLC
  • Standards/Technology
  • Metadata, OAI, FRBR, Emerging technologies
  • Clearinghouse on training and educational
    opportunities
