• The Adult Education Centre (AEC) was born under
  socio-political circumstances marked by the
  transitional proces from dictatorship to
  democracy, a process which began with the death
  of Franco in 1975. Once democracy had been
  established, autonomous governments were created,
  in this case the Junta de Andalucia (Andalusian
  autonomous government), which took on the
  competences of education.

An evening with integration
At the AEC, focus is put on trying to give basic
educational training. The students work in groups
two hours per day. Two or three times per
semester the groups gather to share results and
to debate. The subjects are chosen by the
students and their tutors e.g. women and society,
ecology and in this case integration. The top
picture shows students telling about their
experiences as immigrants in Spain. The picture
below shows the debate afterwards.

One of the aims at the AEC is to create a good
spirit among the students.

The evening turned out to be very interesting for
both students, and teachersas well as visitors
and with lots of good spirit.

The Surroundings
The AEC is situated in the outskirts of Sevilla,
Parque Alcosa. It was officially founded in 1971
as a working class neighbourhood. Its inhabitants
were mainly migrant workers coming from the
countryside to the city to look for work and from
an internal urban migration from the traditional
Sevillian quarters to the outskirts of the city
where more affordable housing was available.

As a part of the meeting the participants were
on a guided tour around Sevilla by bus and on
foot

The AEC has literacy learning groups, new
readers, preparation courses for the free
examination of secondary school and Spanish for
immigrants. In addition, the association stages
workshops and training courses.

Situated in a building from Expo 92 the teacher
training centre offers teachers help with their
teaching as well as meeting facilities in very
modern surroundings.

As a conclusion the participants decided to
continue the discussions in Milano October 2005
