Title: POPs Enabling Activity Project
1POPs Enabling Activity Project
Reza Alami Kia National Project Manager of POPs
Enabling Activity Department of Environment,
I.R.Iran
2Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic
Pollutants(POPs)
3Aim No. 1 Eliminate dangerous POPs, starting
with the 12 worst
4Aim No. 2 Support the transition to safer
alternatives
5Aim No. 3 Target additional POPs for action
6Aim No. 4 Clean-up old stockpiles and equipment
containing POPs
7Aim No. 5Work together for a POPs-free future
8Enabling Activity
- Enabling Activities can help to 'bring home' to
countries, and to broader constituencies, the
implications of their commitments under the
Convention. - Enabling Activity projects have a tendency to
place undue emphasis on the obligations of the
countries at the expense of responding to country
needs and priorities.
9Enabling Activity
- Enabling Activities can enhance the participation
of Convention parties in international fora,
particularly the CoP, and can strengthen their
presence and contribution in the decision-making
process.
10Goals
- Preparing National Implementation Plan (NIP)
integrating views from government and other
stakeholders for meeting country obligations
under the Stockholm Convention - To eliminate and reduce POPs
- To establish or improve the structures for
regulating chemicals use/production/Import/export
/disposal - Information exchange Public information,
- awareness and education Research, development
and monitoring - Technical Assistance and on Financial resources
and mechanisms.
11OBJECTIVES
- Identify the main locations where POPs are
emitted and used - Assess knowledge, attitudes and practices of
industry and the general public, with regard to
POPs handling, storage and application - Identify main uses and quantities of POPs which
have not been prohibited and develop alternative
use (e.g. waste transformer oils)
12OBJECTIVES
- Intensify efforts in the implementation of the
Stockholm Convention on POPs and to create
awareness amongst decision makers, managers,
industry, end-users and the general public on
POPs so as to facilitate the identification of
alternative chemicals and pollution prevention
activities
13Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)
- Negative health and environmental effects
- Bio-accumulation
- Potential for long-range transport
- Long-lasting toxic substances
