1
BI Day - 7, 8 December, 2000
  • BI Software Development for SPS and future LHC
    Operation
  • for EA Software, see EA Day
  • Our Mandate
  • Our Resources
  • Our plan for 2001
  • SL-OP ltgt SL-BI

2
Our Mandate
  • The SL-BI Software Section provides all the
software necessary to develop, control, operate
and maintain the different instruments produced
by the Group (for SPS, LEP, CNGS and LHC).
  • This include the following responsibilities
  • The Real Time Front End Software for our
    instruments.
  • The Expert Graphical User Interfaces GUI for
    our instruments.
  • The Operational GUIs for our instruments. They
are most of the time developed in BI based a
    subset of the Expert ones.
  • Exceptions For some specific cases involving
other Groups (Orbit Correction, Feedback...), the
developments are done in collaboration. For some
other cases, SL/BI delegate the operational GUI
to an other Group (mainly SL/OP).

3
Our Relations with SL/CO 1/2
  • The SL/BI Software Section relies on services
    (software and hardware development environment,
    third party software, middle-ware, timing...)
    provided by SL/CO.
  • The SL/BI policy in this domain is clear and
    explained bellow
  • 1 Use the standard solutions provided by SL/CO
    whenever possible.
  • 2 When no standard solution is available, check
with SL/CO if one could be provided on time.
  • 3 If no standard solution can be provided
    within the timescale, develop one.
  • Latest Examples
  • FFEWG (P. Ribeiro)
  • Java Dataviewer (V. Paris)

4
Our Relations with SL/CO 2/2
  • The SL/BI Software Section insists to participate
in SL/CO projects which may have an impact on its
activity. In this context, we are actively
involved as project member or user in the
    following projects
  • The SPS2001 (M. Jonker)
  • The STOPMI (V. Paris)
  • The HELIX (R. Hopkins)
  • The LHC CP (R. Lauckner)
  • Our objectives are
  • to insure that the chosen solutions are
compatible with our specific development and
    maintenance constraints.
  • To implement the compatible solutions in our new
    developments.

5
BI Development Planning Overview (EA Not
Included)
  • Between 2001 and 2006, BI will be concurrently
  • Developing more than 20 different new systems
    for SLI and LHC
  • BST, Orbit system, Trajectories, BSRT, Wscan,
IPM, Collimators, BLRing, BL Cleaning zone,
Matching, Shaker, HS BPM, Tune Chromaticity,
    Orbit Feedback, Scrapers, OtrEnergy, Luminescence
    Monitors, IBMS, PIPOS, Rosy
  • Maintaining actively existing SPS operational
    systems (20)
  • SBCT, MOPOS, XPOS, TL/TIPOS, IBMS, Wscan, Btvp,
Servo Spill, SEM, Stepping motors, Fast Position,
Fast Profile, Fast Spill, Colmon, Scrapers, SPS
Matching, Luminescence, HeadTail, SPS Tune, Bosc

Resource Evolution (John Coop -gt EA Renov)
7
SL-BI Software for SL-OP
  • Our internal reorganization is now behind us (at
least for a few years at least).
  • We have now the structure to answer your
recurrent requests in our new developments (OS9
    migration, SLI).
  • MD/Operational Acquisition Storage and Export.
  • Online Algorithm.
  • Trouble shooting.
  • Coherent Look Feel .
  • ...
  • We have now the opportunity (SPS2001 STOPMI
OS9 Migration) to make these improvements.

8
Youll get in 2001
  • In our Web Pages and a dedicated BI Folder
maintained by us (the Beam Instrumentation Book
    for Lost Engineers)
  • An up-to-date list of Software and Hardware
    Experts per Instrument.
  • A Trouble Shooting document per BI Software
    GUI.
  • A User Manual per new (or prototype) BI
    Software GUI.
  • A set of new GUIs from our OS9/RPC gt
    Lynx/SPS2001 Migration.
  • The opportunity
  • to include your recurrent requests on our future
    developments (OS9 Migration, SLI, LHC
    Prototypes).
  • to specify these new GUIs.
  • to include online algorithm features in our GUIs
    when necessary (Prototyping phase).

9
Use this Opportunity
  • Help SL-CO to provide an adequate infrastructure.
Participate and be intransigent on OP key points.
  • SPS2001 - STOPMI - Middle-ware - Timing
  • HELIX...
  • Dont give up your Dreams on BI GUIs.
  • Give space for close collaboration with SL-BI-SW
via linkmen (or OP software take care of v1.1,
v1.2) for all our new developments.
  • Dont hesitate to contact us in case of questions
    or problems.
