Mars Berries Found In Utah

• When Marjorie A . Chan saw the first photographs
  of little nodules on the Red Planet, she though,
  Oh, my gosh, theres been groundwater flow on
  Mars.

What are they?

• The Moqui marbles (made of hematite, a type of
  iron) came from southern Utah, but they looked so
  much like the spheres in the Mars photos that
  they almost could have been collected on the
  desolate plains of Meridiani Planum.

Hematite

• Hematite is one of the only minerals on Mars that
  is connected directly to the water process.
• Rovers called the nodules blueberries because
  they were slightly grayer than the orange rocks
  on Mars.

What does it mean?

• It means that Mars also had liquid water at one
  time in its long history. This fact could be
  critical to the search for other life in the
  solar system.
• In addition it could point out a good place to
  search for Martian fossils.
