Why are we involved with surf sports?

• The skills of surf sports saves lives
• Surf lifesavers develop and hone their skills
  through surf sports
• A good sporting experience provides enjoyment and
  self satisfaction through skill acquisition
• Children play sport for fun, to meet friends and
  to learn skills
• Sport develops teamwork

• We want to learn new skills
• We want you to teach us bit by bit so that we can
  remember
• Let us all have a try
• Help us
• Make us feel good
• Give us variety
• It hurts
• We like to win, BUT we try our best!

Some brief history

• Bondi SBLSC conducted the first skills exhibition
  in Feb. 1907
• Feb 1908 Bondi held a Gymkhana (land drill /
  RR / alarm reel race)
• Early competition included tug-o-war, fancy dress
  parade, pillow fight.
• First NSW Championships held at Bondi on 20th
  March 1915 (with only 2 events senior Rescue
  Resuscitation and senior surf race)
• In 1920 new events were added (senior junior
  boats / senior surf teams / senior belt / senior
  beach sprint / march past)
• NSW and Australian Championships conducted since
  1920 (except for 2 years during WW2)

Surf Sports today

• Managed by National Board of Surf Sports, along
  with state boards
• Australian Championships held in March at Kurrawa
  (4 day event with around 7000 competitors)
• Interstate Teams Championships
• Age Championships (U13 U15) about to be
  introduced
• State / Branch based carnival program culminating
  in State / Branch championships

• swimming skills
• negotiating the surf break
• surf board skills
• resuscitation skills
• First aid skills
• teamwork skills (eg. March Past, RR)
• reading and using the surf conditions

What events exist in surf sports?

• beach (eg. Sprints, relays, flags)
• swim (eg. Wades,Surf race, surf teams)
• boards (eg. Board race, board teams)
• teams with combined skills (eg. Cameron relay,
  board rescue, Ironperson
• lifesaving skills (eg. RR, First Aid, Champion
  Lifesaver)
• March Past
