Title: High-energy On-site Accelerator Based Options

1
High-energy On-site Accelerator Based Options
  • Bruce Schumm
  • UC Santa Cruz
  • July 11 2003 SLUO Meeting

2
Z FACTORY OPTIONS
Very rough

  • SOME NOTES
  • ALR statistics saturate at 100 MZ with- out
positron polarization and mt from the LC
  • Some of B physics program is unique
  • Significant second-tier physics program

3
Z-Factory Considerations
Giga-Z Pros
Giga-Z Cons
  • Not cheap (?1B)
  • Been there, done that
  • ALR saturates at 100 MZ
  • Inefficient use of overall LC resources
  • sin2?W to .00005 (no posipol), 0.000015 if
    posipol
  • Improve Ab(x20) Rb (x6) address current
    anomaly
  • LC testbed if warm technology is chosen
  • Potential interim LC com- munity project
  • Some unique contributions in B physics
  • What about 2x1032 (50 MZ/yr)?
  • Full reduction of sin2?W error
  • Ab better by x5-10, Rb by x5
  • Bs mixing, other special B topics (?)
  • A bargain at 0.1B - 0.25B

Higgs Shoppe
  • Good Things
  • Its the HIGGS!!
  • Loop involves anything charged that couples to
    Higgs
  • Testbed for ??

2x1033 ? 20 fb-1 yr-1 (Geometric
Luminosity) Translates to 1K-2K ???H yr-1
  • Not-so Good Things
  • Cost roughly 1B
  • When do we find out if Higgs is really there?
  • Demands high gradient (80 vs. 65 MeV/m for
    mH160
  • Limited electroweak sample for other physics

??? to ? 5-25 depending on MH, running time
5
Note Studies for CLICHE, 20x SLAC ??H Luminosity
1-2 ?
4-5 ?
LHC WEDGE
???(meas)/ ???(SM)
?WW(meas)/ ?WW(SM)
6
Low-Energy ?? Option
  • For 0.3B
  • Premier ?? facility two-? x-section, photon
    structure, B physics, had-ronic physics,
    polarized charm pro-duction
  • Interest in nuclear physics com-munity?
  • For 0.01B
  • Demonstrate some aspects of ?? technology

Would be premier ?? facility 2010
