Background

• Tech Coordinator at Clay Local School District
  since 2002
• Working with open source software since 1999
• 560 students K-12
• 3 buildings, 3 separate voip servers
• 100MB fiber connection between sites.
• 42 classrooms
• 1 FOG server manages images for about 50 of our
  clients
• All clients are XP Pro and PXE boot

What is FOG?

• Workstation image management
• Like Ghost or Drive Image except its free
• Runs on most Linux distributions
• Prefers Fedora 8, but also works with Ubuntu
• Can be stand-alone or VMWare server
• Configuration after installation is web-based
• Relatively simple to install and configure
• Likely to have a name change soon

Why do I need FOG?

• You don't.......... If you have tons of money to
  spend on commercial imaging applications.
• Budget
• Speed
• Easy on your network
• Capabilities (image size)
• Network management
• And now power management as well

Getting Started

• Specs - at least P3 1Ghz, 1GB RAM, 40GB HD, and
  100Mb Linux compatible NIC (Intel Pro100)
• Software - Fedora 8 or better (DVD install works
  best)
• VMWare image from ThoughtPolice also available
• Install Fedora (links to download and install
  guides provided)
• DO NOT enable Firewall
• DO NOT enable SE-Linux security settings
• Run all the needed updates after install
• Set to a static IP address
• Install FOG server software
• Very important to use "su -" command before
  installing
