What is a Scholarship?
  • Money that is granted to individual students on
    the basis of merit.
  • These funds are used strictly for post secondary
    education purposes
  • Tuition
  • Books
  • Residence.

  • Post secondary education is expensive
  • Scholarship funds are available
  • Prestigious
  • Opens opportunities
  • Youve earned it!

Types of Scholarships
  • Merit
  • Bursary

Merit
  • Most are merit scholarships
  • Awarded for excellence in academic achievement,
    music or sports
  • Awarded to the most accomplished students
  • Sometimes there is a minimal fee for the
    application
  • Money is given directly to the student, or
    directly to the college/university for payment of
    tuition

Bursary
  • A non-repayable grant of money
  • Based on financial need and academic achievement
    is also considered
  • An applicant must provide detailed documentation
    regarding financial need.

  • Automatic entrance scholarships
  • Various scholarships you must apply for
  • Student may only receive one entrance scholarship
  • Student may receive other scholarships for which
    an application has been submitted

  • If a scholarship is based on academic
    achievement, it is often renewable if you
    maintain the average
  • You may apply for an unlimited number of
    scholarships

  • strong academics, involved in community service
    and/or extra-curricular activities, have
    excellent communication skills
  • Part of a special group
  • ethnicity, athletic, disability, entering a
    particular field
  • Student that have a high average

    scholarships that apply to them

    who want to help them

  • Dedication to academics, community and
    extra-curricular activities
  • Tracking Sheet (Gr. 9 12)
  • Time management skills
  • Ability to plan
  • Ability to talk oneself into applying
  • Commitment to completion of applications
  • Willing to seek help from family, friends,
    teachers, mentors, and scholarship coach (G.
    Counsellor)

Application Etiquette
  • Plan Ahead. Do not leave it until the last
    minute!
  • Check Scholarship timeline
  • Do your research.
  • If necessary, notify your Guidance Counsellor at
    least 3 weeks ahead of schedule
  • Know everything there is to know about the
    scholarship
  • expectations, requirements, eligibility, deadline
    for applications
  • Familiarize yourself with the application form
  • some might require aptitude tests or SIN number

  • Read the instructions carefully
  • Be creative only if instructed to
  • Fill in every section of the application unless
    not applicable
  • Tell the truth
  • If necessary, request a letter of recommendation
    from teachers and/or community member at least
    1 month before submission of rough draft
  • Send thank you notes to people who write letters
    for you

  • Type the final copy of essay
  • Application form should be very neat and printed
    in black ink
  • Photocopy application package before mailing
  • Send the package out as instructed by the
    institution
  • Read the instructions!!!!!
