Who?
  • Flavius Theodosius was born at Cauca, Spain
  • His father, Theodosius the Elder, was executed
    under unknown circumstances
  • He was asked by the emperor to subdue the
    Visigoths
  • Theodosius was the last emperor of the whole
    Roman Empire
  • Before he was a emperor he was a military leader

  • He signed a peace treaty with the Visigoths
  • Theodosius became the emperor of the Roman empire
    one year before he died
  • Fought in two bloody civil wars
  • He was married twice, his first wife was the
    Spanish lady Aelia Flavia Flaccilla
  • He had two sons named Arcadius and Honorius

  • He was born on January 11, 346
  • In 367-368 he served under his father in the
    military
  • January 379 his career was going down hill until
    Gration had him hailed as his emperal colleague
  • In 380 he declared Christianity Romes official
    religion
  • In 392 he reigned over the western part of the
    empire
  • He was the last ruler of the whole empire
  • In 381 he created the First ecumenical Council of
    Constinantinople at Milan leaving the east to his
    son Arcadius and the west to his son Honorius
  • In January 17, 395 Theodosius past away

Why?
  • He came out of retirement because there was a
    crisis in the Eastern Empire
  • He reorganized his army so he could have a strong
    empire
  • He became into religion after his near death
    illness and started to believe in god
  • He made a treaty called the Persian Treaty with
    the Persians so that they then had a long period
    of peace
  • He went to war with the Western Empire to protect
    the Christian religion
  • He fought against Arbogast and his army

  • After Gratians death Theodosius took power in
    January 19, 379
  • First he commanded an army after others suggested
    him to be emperor
  • He won victories against the Sarmatians
  • After that he became emperor
  • The visigoths were allowed to settle in Thrace as
    federati
  • They had to be in the army but were allowed to
    retain their arms and rulers
  • It became a nation in the boundaries of Rome
  • That is believed to be a reason to the fall of
    the western empire
  • Thoedosius made five separate armies
  • They had their own commanders
