Title: Orange County Breastfeeding Coalition
1The Elixir of Life
- Promoting The Use of Pasteurized Donor Milk on a
Community Level
2- Human milk is the preferred feeding for all
infants, including premature and sick newborns,
with rare exceptions. - (American Academy of Pediatrics and the World
Health Organization)
3- Human milk is species specific.
- It provides unique benefits that include
- Improved developmental
- Social
- Economic
- Environmental outcomes
4Breastmilk is 100 natural. These unique
properties can not be duplicated.
5Breastmilk Has Protective Factors That either
eliminate the risk for or lessen the severity of
- Otitis Media
- Upper Respiratory Infections
- Gastroenteritis
- Necrotizing Enterocolitis
- Allergies
- Asthma
- Eczema
6For The Really Fragile Babies
- Breastmilk Can Save Their Life
- Faster weight and overall growth gains
- It is more easily digested
- It is 100 safe and sterile
- Premature babies fed breastmilk were able to go
home earlier than those fed formula.
7But What About Those Moms Who Cant Produce Their
Own Milk?
- The Next Best is
- Pasteurized Donor Breastmilk
8What is Pasteurized Donor Breastmilk?
- It is milk collected from other breastfeeding
moms. - It is donated milk that is heated at a high
temperature to kill the germs or viruses in the
milk. - It is shipped from the Milk Bank to the hospital
or homes of babies who need it.
9What Does All Of This Have To Do With You?
- Barriers
- We need to create solutions that dont follow the
usual avenues. - Social Support
- Hospitals respond to market demands
- Moms need to be supported in making the decision
to use donor milk. - Marketing
- If more people became aware of the importance
that donor breastmilk plays in the health of our
most fragile, we could actually shift the
paradigm.
10What Is That Paradigm?
- That formula is the normal option that should be
given to a baby when their own mothers is not
yet or unable to provide her own milk.
11What Is The Shift?
- That human milk should be the only option when a
mothers own milk is not available.
12Again, What Does This Have To Do With You?
- We need you to talk.
- We need you to share the information that youve
learned today/tonight. - We need you to take the information youve
learned and give it to others who can and will
use it.
13We Also Need Help With
- Recruiting potential donors or potential
candidate for using donor milk. - Providing donors with the tools they need to pump
and store their milk. - Help with shipping and sometimes distribution to
other hospitals.
14What Are Your Thoughts?
15Are You Up For A Challenge?
- Can a Lion become a Lactivist?
16Thank you for your time.
- Final Thoughts
- Be open minded.
