1
Moving Metadata Upstream early outcomes from the
OCLC Next Generation Cataloging Pilot
LIBER Annual General Conference Istanbul
2nd July, 2008
  • Janet Lees
  • Community Liaison
  • OCLC

2
What Fred Saw
3
What needs to be done?
  • Specialist view
  • conformance to specifications (rules)
  • priorities fullness and detail
  • Pragmatist view
  • make as many materials as possible available as
    quickly as possible
  • priorities speed and efficiency
  • Users view
  • Easy, fast and convenient
  • Priorities just do it get it now

4
What is the conclusion?
  • Growing realisation that the current model is
    unsustainable
  • LC Working Group on the Future of Bibliographic
    Control
  • Increase the efficiency of bibliographic
    production and maintenance
  • Make more use of bibliographic data earlier in
    the supply chain
  • Publishers are facing the same issues
  • Metadata creation is expensive and labour
intensive but no or incomplete metadata means
    no or lower sales

5
Exploring alternatives cooperatively
  • Next Generation Cataloguing and Metadata Creation
    Pilot
  • OCLC pilot program with publishers, vendors and
    libraries January June 2008 http//www.oclc.org/
    productworks/nextgencataloging.htm

6
Whats the pilot about?
  • Finding solutions that are interoperable and
easily shared inside and outside the library
    community
  • Working with partners outside the library
(publishers, vendors etc) to acquire metadata and
repurpose it centrally to fit into a new workflow
    / supply chain
  • Exploring ways to create, ingest and share
    multiple types of metadata
  • Libraries becoming more open to the use of
    non-MARC data, vocabularies etc
  • Publishers finding ways to leverage library data
    including classification, terminologies and
    authorities
  • Changing management workflows and practices
  • Reduce practices that require manual manipulation
    of existing metadata
  • Allow different levels of metadata based on
    material type, user needs
  • Allow metadata for new titles to be enriched over
    time

7
Whos participating?
  • Libraries Phoenix Public, Ohio State
    University, Chicago Public, MIT
  • Publishers/Vendors Ingram, Princeton University
Press, Hachette Book Group, Taylor Francis
  • Advisory Board Paul DeAnna, National Library of
    Medicine, Phil Schreur, Stanford University
Libraries, David Williamson, LC, John Chapman,
    University of Minnesota Libraries, Michael
    Norman, University of Illionois,
    Urabana-Champaign, Laura Dawson, Consultant, Nora
    Rawlinson, Consultant, Kevin Clair, Barnes
Noble, Marlene Harris, Chicago Public Library

8
What is the pilot doing?
  • Publisher and vendors provided title data in ONIX
  • OCLC converted the data to MARC
  • Metadata is enriched through data mining of
WorldCat and data mapping from existing data
    elements
  • Resulting MARC record added to WorldCat
  • Libraries give feedback on the records in
    WorldCat
  • Enhanced metadata is converted back to ONIX
  • Publisher and vendors provide feedback

9
What have we learnt so far?
  • It took longer than we thought..
  • ONIX to MARC crosswalk needed to be enhanced
  • MARC to ONIX crosswalk was created and enhanced
  • Define rules and hierarchies for data mining
    based on FRBR
  • More mapping between DDC and BISAC subject
    headings
  • Need several iterations of ingest, creation /
    enhancement, feedback .

10
Work in progress..
  • Pilot Advisory Board providing input on
development of evaluative tools and measures
  • Pilot partners to use evaluative tools to provide
feedback on record quality and usefulness
  • Create some case studies
  • Report and recommend next steps
  • Disseminate at appropriate venues

11
Summary
  • Libraries, OCLC, Publishers and Vendors working
together to repurpose the supply chain
  • Goal is reduction of effort and duplication
  • Metadata should be acquired early and once .. And
made to work harder / smarter
  • Need to understand the required changes to
workflows for all stakeholders in order to
    realise benefits

12
Before we go
  • Update on changes to OCLC Governance
  • OCLC Board of Trustees and Members Council
    approved a new governance structure
  • New structure will comprise a number of regional
councils, a global council and Board of Trustees
  • Global council will elect 6 members to (13 17
    member) Board of Trustees
  • Definition of membership will be changed to
    encourage more participation
  • Transition process over the next 12-18 months
    (input sought)
  • Fuller description at www.oclc.org/uk/en/news/rele
    ases/200812.htm
