• A form of reversible birth control.
• Set of six small silicone tablets, each
  consisting of 36mg of levonorgestrel, are
  implanted in a fan shape in upper arm.
• Works within 24 hours and last for up to five
  years.

Hormone Actions

• Levonogestrel (a progestin) is a agonist of
  progesterone.
• Acts as a negative feedback to GnRH, which
  prevents the LH surge and normal ovulation from
  occurring.
• Thickens the mucus of the cervix preventing sperm
  from entering and reduces uterine lining which
  makes implantation of an egg less likely-abortive.

Norplant-Mechanism of Action

• Acts as steroid.
• Target cell is progesterone receptor in
  hypothalamus.
• In nucleus of neuron, it changes protein
  formation so it inhibits neuron from producing
  GnRH.
• Also effects progesterone receptors in pituitary
  by effecting LH and FSH.
