2006 - The first LEED Silver certified elementary
school in Canada, Thomas L. Wells Scarborough
Ontario, is the first of a new generation of high
performance 'green-schools' in Toronto. The
school is designed to create a stimulating
environment that is conducive to learning, with

for students and local residents.

2008 Solar power panels are placed atop a parking
lot at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park.
The photovoltaic farm is expected to last at
least 40 years and is currently producing about
45 of the colleges energy, or 1.9 million
kilowatts annually for a yearly savings of
270,000.

Government Actions
On March 10, 2008, the Government announced
further details of the greenhouse gas emissions
regulations of the Turning the Corner plan
putting into place one of the toughest regulatory
regimes in the world to meet its target of
reducing greenhouse gases an absolute 20 from
2006 by 2020.

Fire Protection Water Conservation

• Requirements in California to de-chlorinate fire
  protection water discharge to storm sewer systems
  (fire pump testing).

• U.S. State EPA Departments requiring designated
  permits to discharge non-potable water from
  sprinkler systems or fixed water supplies onto
  the ground or into storm water systems.

  Reinforced Plastic). Tempered glass or
  polycarbonate skylights are recommended.
• All skylights subject to damage from wind driven
  debris.

  sunlight UV exposure.

• Fireworks ignited the FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced
  Plastic) roof mounted skylight at this warehouse
  causing the fire to spread into the building.
  Automatic sprinklers below the skylight
  controlled the fire.
• 850,000 Physical Damage -0- Lost Business
• Roofing Contractor Causes Skylight Fire
• Roofing contractors working on a medical products
  warehouse ignited the roof covering which spread
  the fire to an acrylic skylight. Automatic
  sprinklers and employee action prevented the fire
  from spreading to the warehouse storage.
• 450,000 Physical Damage -0- Lost Business

North Dakota plant destroyed by fire posted Sept.
8, 2008 at 314 p.m. CST A recent fire at
All-American Biodiesel's plant in York, N.D.,
destroyed a quarter of the business and has
brought to light a dangerous situation that could
be repeated in rural communities throughout the
United States. About three years ago, the
towns former school house was purchased by
All-American Biodiesel with the intent of
converting it to a 5 MMgy soy/canola-based
biodiesel production facility. Randy Silliman,
mayor of York, saw the potential hazards and
argued for the plants location to be denied. I
just thought that it needed to be farther than 50
feet from businesses and residents. Silliman
said the state fire code allows industrial
businesses to operate just 50 feet from private
residences. Unless towns pass zoning regulations
or ordinances, there is nothing preventing
businesses that use hazardous chemicals from
operating within city limits. According to
Silliman, most small towns, including York, dont
have regulations because we trust everybody.

Whats Next?
Coming in 2009 - This green roof will be the
largest in Canada when complete. It's the roof of
the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Besides the multi-hectare intensive green roof,
it will have energy efficient lighting and
electrical systems, an on-site desalinization
system, and a grey-water treatment that will
provide irrigation for the green roof. The
footings for the load-bearing piles have been
designed to support marine life.
