Title: Multimodal Therapy

1
Multimodal Therapy
  • ARNOLD LAZARUS

2
Discuss
  • The term bespoke therapy has been used to
    describe the multimodal orientation. This
conveys the custom made personalistic emphasis
of this theory. The form, style, and cadence of
therapy are fitted, whenever possible, to each
    clients perceived requirements. The basic
    question is
  • Who or what is best for this particular person?
    (Corsini Wedding, p. 342).

3
MMT - Corey (2001)
  • Personality - Can be divided into 7 major areas
    of functioning (Corey, 2001)
  • Although these modalities are interactive, they
can be considered discrete functions (p. 277).
  • This model implies that we are social beings who
move, feel, sense, imagine and think (p. 277).

4
Four Principles of MMT - Corey (2001)
  • 1. Humans act and interact across the 7 areas of
    the BASIC ID.
  • 2. These modalities are interconnected and must
be treated as an interactive system (Corey,
    2001, p. 278).

5
Four Principles of MMT - Corey (2001)
  • 3. Accurate evaluation (diagnosis) is best
accomplished by systematically assessing each of
the 7 modalities and the interaction among them.
  • 4. A comprehensive approach to treatment involves
the specific correction of significant problems
across the BASIC ID (Corey, 2001, p. 278).

6
  • MMT begins with a comprehensive assessment of
the 7 modalities of human functioning (Corey,
    2001, p. 278).
  • Questions that relate to the BASIC ID are asked
    to the client

Brief Therapy Using MMT - Corey 2001
  • According to Lazarus (1997), MMT can be used for
brief therapy, if the following 8 issues are
    examined
  • 1. Conflicting or ambivalent feelings
  • 2. Maladaptive behaviors
  • 3. Misinformation
  • 4. Missing information

16
Making MMT Short-term
  • 5. Interpersonal pressures and demands
  • 6. External stressors outside the immediate
    interpersonal network
  • 7. Severe traumatic experiences
  • 8. Biological dysfunctions

17
6 Distinctive Features of MMT(Corsini and
Wedding, 2001, p. 341)
  • 1. The specific and comprehensive attention given
    to the BASIC ID
  • 2. The use of second order BASIC ID assessments
  • 3. Use of modality profiles
  • 4. Use of structural profiles
  • 5. Deliberate bridging procedures
  • 6. Tracking the modality firing order

18
Thoughts
  • MMT believes that the more disturbed the client
is, the greater the specific excesses and
deficits will be throughout the BASIC ID. The
model employed may be viewed as based on
    actualization and self-determination rather than
    pathology (Corsini Wedding, p. 354).
