7Importance of Cocoa to the Economy of Ghana
- Cocoa is the backbone of Ghanas economy
- Cocoa is the major foreign exchange earner for
Ghana (23 of export earnings.) - Employs about 24 of the labour force.
- Succeeding Governments after Independence have
all rely on cocoa as a means of public finance
8Background of Cocoa Production in Ghana
- Cocoa production dates back to 1876 by Tetteh
Quarshie,a black smith, who brought 5 cocoa pod
from Fernando Po - Cultivation started in the Eastern Region of
Ghana - Today, cocoa is produced in 6 out of the 10
regions of Ghana. - Cocoa farmers and their families make up around
15 of the Population - Generally cocoa in Ghana is produced by small
farm holders about 2-3 hectares per farmer. - There are about 800,000 small cocoa farms in
Ghana - Large farm holders are about 5
- 15 of cocoa farmers are females, 85 males

10Varieties of cocoa
- Three main Varieties
- Amelonando also referred as Tetteh Quarshie
(matures between 5-6years, Best in yield but
prone to diseases pest) - Amezonia (From South America.Robust and start
yielding in 5yrs) - Hybrid Improvement over Amezonia Amelonado
(Breeded by CRIG, it yields in 2-3yrs,bigger
seeds more resistance to diseases and pests. It
yields all year round) e.g. Akokorabedibi, Tafo

20Pricing of Cocoa
- The price of cocoa is determined by the world
market and follows the normal demand and supply
curve. This makes the price of cocoa fluctuates
between about 800 - 2000 per tonne. - This makes farmers income unreliable
- The Government through Ministry of Finance CMC
announces the farmers price of cocoa before the
main crop season. - Current Farmers Price of a bag of cocoa stands at
72 of Free On Board. - To make price fairer to farmers Kuapa Kokoo Org.
which is Farmers owned company decided to join
the Fair Trade Organizations. - This allows the farmers to sell their cocoa at a
better price

organisation - Established in 1993 by farmers
- Membership (about 45,000 farmers)
- In 1,500 villages

- Low export of Fair trade cocoa (7)
- Kuapa is operating with about 1,500 societies
(village group) - Only 35 women groups have really benefited from
our micro-credit facility. - There is the need to get support in the form of
finance to train, empower and get the poor women
folk get more sustainable trade.
