  • An air mass is often 1000 miles across
  • The boundary between air masses is called a front
  • There are 4 types of fronts
  • Warm, cold, stationary occluded

  • Warm air moves into an area filled with cold air
  • Cirrus, cirrostratus, altostratus, stratus clouds
  • Light rain for a long time

  • Cold air moves into an area filled with warm air
  • Cumulonimbus clouds heavy rain for a short time

  • Cold air moves into an area with warm air moving
    over cool air a cold front overtakes a warm
    front.
  • Heavy rain at first, then light rain complex
