Title: The Effects of Tobacco Use

1
Chapter 21
  • The Effects of Tobacco Use

2
Tobacco Use Serious Health Risk
  • 1 cause of preventable disease and death in
    U.S.
  • Nicotine the additive drug found in tobacco
    leaves.
  • Carcinogen cancer-causing substance
  • Tar thick, sticky, dark fluid produced when
    tobacco burns.
  • Carbon monoxide colorless, odorless, and
    poisonous gas

3
Pipes and Cigars
  • Cigars contain significantly more nicotine and
produce more tar and carbon monoxide than
cigarettes do. One cigar can contain as much
nicotine as a pack of cigarettes. Pipe and cigar
smokers have an increased risk of developing
cancers of the lip, mouth, and throat.

4
Harmful Effects Of Smokeless Tobacco
  • Smokeless Tobacco is tobacco that is sniffed
through the nose, held in the mouth, or chewed.
  • Delivers both nicotine and carcinogens to the
body that can be two to three times the amount in
    a single cigarette.
  • Leukoplakia thickened, white, leathery-looking
spots on the inside of the mouth that can develop
    into oral cancer.

5
How Tobacco Affects the Body
  • Short-Term Effects
  • Changes in brain chemistry. Nicotine causes the
body to crave more of the drug. May experience
    withdrawal symptoms such as headaches,
nervousness, and trembling as soon as 30 minutes
    after last tobacco use.

6
How Tobacco Affects the Body
  • Increased respiration and heart rate. Breathing
during physical activity becomes more difficult.
  • Dulled taste buds and reduced appetite.
Tobacco users often lose much of their ability to
    enjoy food.
  • Bad breath and smelly hair, clothes, and skin.
These are unattractive effects that may cause
    people to avoid you.

7
How Tobacco Affects the Body
  • Long-Term Effects
  • Chronic bronchitis repeated tobacco use can
damage cilia in bronchi until they no longer
function. Leads to Tar buildup of tar in lungs,
causing chronic coughing and excessive mucus
    secretion.
  • Emphysema this is a disease that destroys the
tiny air sacs in the lungs. They become less
elastic, making it more difficult of the lungs to
absorb oxygen. Uses 80 of their energy just to
    breathe.

8
Long-Term EffectsCont.
  • Lung Cancer This is when the cilia in the
bronchia are destroyed, and extra mucus cannot be
    expelled.
  • Coronary heart disease and stroke. Nicotine
constricts blood vessels, which cuts down on
circulation, or blood flow. Nicotine also
contributes to plaque buildup in the blood
vessels, which can lead to hardened arteries, a
    condition called arteriosclerosis. Arteries may
become clogged, increasing the risk of heart
attack and stroke. The risk of sudden death from
heart disease is three times greater for greater
    for smokers than nonsmokers.

9
Other Consequences
  • Legal consequences selling tobacco products to
persons under the age of 18.
  • Social Consequences many people find secondhand
smoke and the smell of tobacco offensive, bad
    breath, yellowed teeth.
  • Financial Consequences many spend more than
2,000 each year. Taxpayer pay about 97 billion
    a year.
