Mortality Rates

2
Mortality Rate
  • Mortality rate is a measure of death rates in a
    country
  • To death rate, is the number of deaths per 1000
    people in a population.
  • The higher the mortality rate, the greater the
chance of a country falling into natural
    population decrease
  • The countries we have chosen to analyze are
    India, Afghanistan, UK and China.

3
India
  • India The majority of the Indian population is
either Islamic or Hindu. The official languages
of this historic country are Hindi and English.
  • India is a war torn country, that has experienced
several major conflicts in the past few decades.
  • As a result, massive overpopulation,
    environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and
ethnic and religious strife, all this despite
impressive gains in economic investment and
    output.
  • Overall, the mortality rate of India is 8.49
    deaths/1,000 population

4
Afghanistan
  • Afghanistan's recent history is characterized by
war and civil unrest. The Soviet Union invaded in
1979, but was forced to withdraw 10 years later
by anti-Communist mujahidin forces supplied and
trained by the US, Saudi Arabia, Pakistann, and
others. Fighting subsequently continued among the
various mujahidin factions, giving rise to a
state of warlordism that eventually spawned the
    Taliban.
  • Death rate 17.15 deaths/1,000 population

5
United Kingdom
  • At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over
one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half
of the 20th century saw the UK's strength
seriously depleted in two World Wars.
  • The United Kingdom is one of the most developed
and financially stable countries in the world.
This has led used to advance medical techniques
and technology, leading to a great reduced death
    rate (10.21 deaths/1,000 population)

6
China
  • China is a country in East Asia. The main
religions are Confucianism and Buddhism. The main
language is Chinese (including the different
religions). China became an united independent
empire in 210 B.C.. The country is a dictatorial
republic ruled by the Communist Party of China.
Hong Kong and Macau have autonomy with a
    multi-party system.
  • Death rate 6.74 deaths/1,000 population

7
Economic Factors
  • The economic factors also plays a major role in
determining the death rate of a country. The
more financially stable the country is, the lower
the death rate. This is evident today as a lot of
the MEDCs have a lower death rate then the
LEDCs (for example, China and India have a lower
death rate then the UK and Australia) If the
economy is poor then there is poor standards of
living, poor health care, and a lack of
necessities. These care needed to prevent a high
death rate. If the economy is strong, more
\money would be put into better health care and
standards of living. (for e.g England spends
almost 20 of its financial budget on health care
whilst Afghanistan spends just under 2.

8
Social Factors
  • Perhaps the only social factor, war, is the
result of disputes in society (in a very general
way). This can be both within a country or
against other countries. This can also be a
political factor if the war is between different
    countries.
  • War-torn countries like Afghanistan will have
experienced much greater mortality rates, simply
due to war casualties. War particularly
    devastates the young, male population.
  • On the other hand, a country like the UK, which
has not experienced major combat, will have more
    stable mortality rates in comparison.

9
Cultural Factors
  • There arent any obvious cultural factors.
  • Unlike birth rates, where religion plays a part,
people die simply because of health conditions
    (or killing).
  • Culture may only affect health conditions in
terms of lifestyle. For example, a place like
China, which feeds its citizens with a basic
diet, may be healthier than somewhere like the
UK, where more oily, fatty and unhealthy foods
are consumed more. Countries where exercise is
practiced more, is also healthier generally. A
healthier lifestyle can lead to lower death
    rates.
  • Culture may also affect death rates because the
culture that the people live in, may or may not
support capital punishment or executions. An
example is the UK, where people arent executed.
However, China does have capital punishment.

10
Political Factors
  • Political Factors do not affect death rates at
    all.
  • At most, political factors can increase the death
rate by capital punishment and executions, which
is very minimal in most cases. An example of one
    of these places is Afghanistan.

11
Conclusion
  • Overall, the mortality rate in country is based
    on two main things
  • If it has been in major wars, like in Afghanistan
for example, the mortality rate will be much
    higher.
  • The other point is the consideration of the
economic development and lifestyle of the people.
If there is a cleaner and healthier environment,
and people seek healthier lifestyles, then the
    death rate is less.
