CPM basics

• Advantages are
• Maintaining articular cartilage nutrition
• Controlled forces act on collagen
• Decreased effects of disuse
• Retard contractures
• Less joint stiffness

Effects of Immobilization

• Newly synthesized collagen lays down haphazardly
• PCT loses water and GAG
• Ligs take significantly less loads
• Fibrofatty infiltration
• Contracture

Application of CPM

• Apply CPM through adequate ROM without causing
  distress.
• Line up joint with unit appropriately
• Pt should use the unit
• Use the unit four times each day for one hour

Indications for CPM

• Post surgical joints/soft tissue
• Post manipulation
• Inhibit edema formation

Contraindications

• Unstable fracture
• Joint sepsis the first 72 hours
