To log into blackboard you need to, first goto
blackboard.mcps.k12.md.us

• Open up a window in Internet Explore (IE). Type
  blackboard.mcps.k12.md.us in the address bar of
  IE.
• In order to work this tutorial you will need to
  know how to toggle between the IE window with
  blackboard and this tutorial.

• This web tour hopes to train you on how to use
  blackboard.mcps.k12.md.us.
• There are four different tours you can take in
  this training.
• Map, backpack and Machete- -Independent Learning
• Self Guided ATV- How to login to blackboard is
  reviewed. Use a graphic display panel to explore
  different areas of Blackboard in your own order.
• Jeep Tour How to login to blackboard explained.
  Next, each of the major functions in blackboard
  is broken down into challenges. Complete each
  challenge.
• RV Tour Your trip begins with an explanation of
  each area of blackboard. After you become
  comfortable with what the program can do, take
  the same skill challenges as the Guided Jeep
  Adventure!

• Once you have loged into blackboard, you will
  need to learn how to manever about the website. I
  encourage you to play around with the student
  functions of BlackBoard at your Leisure. At the
  Moment, I would like you to click on the
  Control Panel Button.
• The Control Panel is where an instructor can
  manipulate the look and feel of the course.. It
  is also where you go to grade student work,
  create quizzes, set up discussions and much,
  much, more!

Finding the Control Panel!

• Once you are into blackbvoard.mcps.k12.md.us, you
  need to learn how to maneuver about the website.
  I encourage you to play around with the student
  functions of BlackBoard at your Leisure. At the

Content Area

• Announcement Insert an announcement on the lead
  page of your web site. 
• Course Information This is where you should
  place basic information about your course.
  (Syllabus, grading scales, generic rubrics
  etc...) 
• Staff Information You can place basic
  information about the instructor in the course.
  Don't forget your picture!
• Course Materials Course Materials and Course
  Assignments are a bit redundant to me. If I were
  you I would turn off the Materials section and
  just post all resources and documents in
  Materials.
• Assignments Assignments is where you should put
  your course assignments as well as any other
  documents relative to your course. Use the folder
  options to organize materials by chapters or
  units. 
• Web Sites You can post useful links to the world
  wide web here.

Course Tools

• Course Calendar Calendar allows you to post
  different events and deadlines. You can post
  events for the whole course and students can post
  their own personal reminders. This calendar is
  geared more towards a business person schedule
  and not a seven period day.
• Tasks Tasks is a folder where you can note
  different "tasks" for students to complete. It
  would be more useful in a course that is very
  project oriented and the students work through
  different modules on their own. It is probably
  over kill to use both "Tasks" and "Assignments."
• Send Email Very useful for sending out updates
  and reminders. You can send email to individual
  students, the whole class or anything in
  between. 
• Virtual Classroom This is the chat function. It
  is a very large function and can crash slower
  computers. Chats tend to be inefficient with a
  group larger than six or seven. I don't recommend
  using it directly in instruction, but allowing
  your students the option to chat with in your
  course is a good option.  All chats transcripts
  are recorded. 
• Digital Drop Box Students can turn in
  assignments online. You can grade the assignments
  and send back feedback.

Course Options

• Course Settings Basic functions of Blackboard.

• Course Properties Course Utilities You will use
  Course Utilities Sparingly. It lets you archive a
  course, remove certain sections of a course and
  to add a course cartridge. 
• Course Images Add a banner image and change
  button style.
• Resources Blackboard.com creates and updates a
  "resources" page. You can choose to allow your
  students access to other pages or block them. You
  can also customize what resources they see to
  match with you content area. 
• Course Marketing Instructors can change their
  name, email and other content information. The
  course title and basic information can also be
  switched here.

Course Settings

• Course Course Properties- Set the title,
  description and category for your course.
• Area Availability- Turn on and off the different
  areas of the areas of the your course
• Course Availability - Set user availability for
  this course
• Guest Access - Set guest access for this course.
• Course Duration - Sets the length of the course
• Enrollment Options - Control the enrollment
  options in the course
• Categorize Course - Youll use this once and
  never again.
• Set Course Entry Point - You can determine what
  page you want to load first in BlackBoard.

User Management

• Add Users Add students to the course. There is a
  batch enroll feature which lets you enroll
  students fast via a spreadsheet.
• List Modify Users  You can change the status of
  students within your course. You can see a class
  list.
• Remove User Remover Users.
• Manage Groups This lets you create smaller
  groups of students. Each group will have a
  individual storage space, a private discussion
  and chat area

Assistance

• Online Support Not really useful. Don't worry
  about using it.
• Online Manual Great manual! Use it!
• Contact System Admin Theoretically it lets you
  contact the sites system administrator.  In
  reality it is only a generic email on most
  blackboard servers. MCPS people-- call the help
  desk.

Assessment

• Assessment Manager Create quizzes and tests.
  Create Surveys.
• Pool Manager Create a test bank of questions.
• Online Gradebook You can use blackboard as your
  grading tool. You can export and import grades
  for students. This tool is a bit clunky-- try it
  out before you dedicate yourself to using it.
• Course Statistics Here you can spy. You can see
  stats on usage of your site. Both individual and
  group statistics are available. Really nice
  charts make processing the statistics easy.

• The menu bar at the bottom of your screen will
  let you move from one program to the other with
  ease. To see your BlackBoard course your would
  click on Blackboard Course Button. To see this

Extra Skill HTML Assignments
Adding HTML to the assignment description If you
know HTML (or if you understand how to cut and
paste HTML from FrontPage) you can type code in
any of the Text sections in blackboard. Once
HTML is added to these boxes, your new code will
be displayed seamlessly within blackboard.

Hint Before you begin adding content to
blackboard, stop and think about the structure of
your course. Create a folder structure that
mimics the way your curriculum is organized.
Create all the folders you will use in a year
first. Build the content later!
