Purpose
  • To evaluate the efficacy of
  • stained amniotic membrane transplantation
    (AMT)
  • for cosmetic repair of band keratopathy

Method
  • Tissue marking dye is injected using 1 cc syringe
  • with 30 gauze needle in bevel up
  • All patients followed for a period of at least 6
    months

Results
  • Total nine eyes of 9 patients
  • Mean patient age 25.7 years (range 1863)
  • Mean time to epithelial healing 11.3 days
    (range724)
  • Preop. VA NLP 7 eyes, LP 2 eyes
  • Mean follow-up period 7.4 months

  • Causes of band keratopathy
  • Trauma 5 of 9 eyes
  • Infectious disease 2 of 9 eyes
  • Congenital vitreoretinal disease 1 of 9 eyes
  • Following intraocular surgery 1 of 9 eyes
  • Comorbid diagnosis
  • Sensory exotropia 4 of 9 eyes
  • Traumatic cataract 2 of 9 eyes

Results
  • All patients noted satisfactory results with
    cosmetic staining
  • A remaining opacity was not observed during
    follow-up period
  • Postoperative complications
  • Foreign body sensation (8/9) and conjunctival
    injection (7/9) disappeared within 2 months after
    surgery

Conclusion
  • Cosmetic repair by corneal tattooing and stained
    AMT is an effective treatment for band
    keratopathy and is not associated with any
    significant complications.
