2Learning new vocabulary is critical in every
content area.

- Introduce words, give definitions, and never use
them again - Rely on one strategy to teach vocabulary
- Use the dictionary method and have students
memorize definitions - Assume students come to your class with the
strategies to learn and remember new vocabulary
- Do
- Teach vocabulary explicitly and create activities
to make words memorable - Use a variety of techniques to reach all of your
learners - Make sure that vocabulary instruction is
incorporated into your daily/weekly lessons - Encourage students to find unknown words and
create their own vocabulary lists

6Synonyms/Antonyms
- When learning new vocabulary words, give students
synonyms that might help them remember what they
mean - Also, you can use antonyms to help explain the
definitions or to use in the Frayer Model
Its a good idea to teach each student how to use
a thesaurus. If you have some available in your
room, encourage students to use them.

- Write down vocabulary words on index cards or
small pieces of paper. - Have students sort and categorize the words into

out unknown words?
- How to use context clues
- To look at root words
- To look at affixes (pre-fix, suffix)
- To use the dictionary or glossary to look up
unknown words - Bring the word to discussion
10What strategies can I give my students to help
them solve word problems?
- Create a step-by-step process that leads them
through the word problem - Have them underline the actual question
- Then, have them decide what they need to do to
solve the question (what operation) - Make strategies a repetitive process (if students
arent expected to and do not get into the habit
of solving word problems step-by-step, then they
wont do it automatically)
