25How to calculate the key switching index of S8500?
About Backplane Bandwidth 6 pairs of SERDES
between one I/O and one engine. One SERDES
bandwidth is 3.125Gbps. We have two engines (in
load-sharing mode) and double bandwidth of SERDES
is saved for upgrading capacity. So, the
backplane bandwidth of one I/O is 62 2
3.125Gbps2 150Gbps. So, S8512 backplane
bandwidth is 150Gbps12 1.8Tbps, S8508
backplane bandwidth is 150Gbps 8 1.2Tbps,
S8505 backplane bandwidth is 150Gbps 5
750Gbps. About Switching Capacity 6 pairs of
SERDES between one I/O and one engine. One SERDES
bandwidth is 3.125Gbps. 8B/10B coding is used for
hardware coding. So, the switching capacity of
one I/O is 62 2 3.125Gbps0.8 60Gbps(under
full duplex mode). So, S8512 switching capacity
is 60Gbps12 720Gbps, S8508 switching capacity
is 60Gbps 8 480Gbps, S8505 switching capacity
60Gbps 5 300Gbps. About Forwarding Rate The
forwarding rate of 1GE is 1.488Mpps with 64-byte
packet. S8500 supports 24GE interface model at
line rate. So, S8512 forwarding rate is
1.488Mpps 24 12 428Mpps, S8508 forwarding
rate is 1.488Mpps 24 8 285Mpps, S8505
forwarding rate is 1.488Mpps 24 5 178Mpps.

29Smooth Upgrading Capability
Upgrading Capability
- It is only needed to upgrade the main control
engine (by deploying dual Crossbar ) for double
switching capacity in the near future. - All interface modules and chassis can be
compatible with the new engine. - It is cost-effective for customers and could
well protect the customers investment.

51Competition Analysis-System architecture
Catalyst 6500
C6500
- Backplane design with 32G bus, increasing
possibility of single point of failure - Sup2 and 256G SFM occupy at least 2 slots in
chassis, port density is not competitive - C65 can offer upto 400Mpps throughput only in
case of Supervisor Engine 720, WS-67xx interface
card, and DFC3 card - Sup720 can work with WS-65xx/68xx interface
modules, but only one 8G or dual 8G channels
available, utilization of bandwidth is quite low
S8500
Quidway S8500
- Passive backplane design
- Dual SRPUs can work in load sharing or
active/standby mode according to customers
requirements - All interface modules are distributed design,
which process L2/L3MPLS services - S8500 adopt packet by packet forwarding, which
protect system from virus - Great expansibility, S8500 will release new SRPN
series main control board (Q4/06) with 2
Crossbars onboard for each SRPN, switching
capacity can reach upto 1.44T
52Conclusion
- Scalability (engine and service cards)
- More service cards (content, security, and etc)
- Complicated configuration
