10
What on earth is CME, and why should you care?
11
Definition (USA perspective)
  • What is CME?
  • educational activities that serve to
maintain, develop, or increase the knowledge,
    skills, and professional performance and
relationships a physician uses to provide
services for patients, the public, or the
    profession. (AMA/ACCME )

12
What this means in Plain English
  • CME consists of Educational activities that help
practicing doctors to learn new information and
skills to help them take better care of their
    patients.

13
Around the world CME, is becoming increasingly
regulated.
CME
14
Most states require physicians to obtain CME
credits to maintain their medical license.
15
Most Specialty Boards require CME for continued
certification.
16
Most hospitals requires that physicians obtain
CME credits for hospital appointments and
re-appointments (credentialing).
17
Quality CME activities play a vital role in the
life-time learning of physicians and other
healthcare providers.
CME
18
The ACCME (Accreditation Council for Continuing
Medical Education) was formed to monitor
providers of CME in the USA.
19
CME is part of the system of accountability in
healthcare
CME must be Based on valid content Effective in
improving practice Linked to quality and
safety Independent of commercial interests
20
The ACCMEs job is to help ensure CME activities
are of scientific merit and appropriate for the
people who participate.
21
UVA School of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME
to provide CME for physicians.

Nigeria's telemedicine project is a nine-site
program, funded by the country's National Space
Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) for the
Ministry of Health. NASRDA has installed
telemedicine equipment in two Nigerian hospitals,
Ibadan Teaching Hospital and Maiduguri Teaching
Hospital, as well as some additional, federal
clinics throughout the country. Additionally,
NASRDA provided a working telemedicine clinic in
a bus that will travel to the most remote parts
of Nigeria to provide primary healthcare
services. Furnishing connectivity for the
program, Nigcomsat-1, Nigeria's advanced
communication satellite, links the medical data
sent from the bus to the in-country hospitals,
giving patients and doctors in remote areas
access to expert care.
