Reading and Reviewing
  • Why was Cains sacrifice refused while Ables was
    accepted?
  • Ables sacrifice was made with a pure heart while
    Cains was made with jealousy
  • Three important things about offering sacrifices
    to God
  • The gift must be offered with pure or sinless
    heart.
  • The offering is a thanksgiving to God for his
    blessings and protection.
  • The offering of sacrifice shows sorrow for sin
    and a desire for forgiveness.
  • Three things are required for every offering
  • A priest, that is, someone to do the offering
  • A victim, something to be offered.
  • An altar, somewhere for the offering to take
    place.

5
Jesus Our Sinless High Priest
  • Jesus lived a life without sin
  • That means that any offering that he makes to the
Father is perfectly pure of heart and acceptable
    to the Father
  • Jesus is called our High Priest which means that
he is the greatest High Priest of God

6
Jesus Our Sinless Victim
  • Along with being the priest of his sacrifice
    Jesus was also the victim
  • Jesus altar, or place of offering, was the table
of the Last Supper and the Cross of Calvary
  • Two different places but only one priest, victim,
    and one sacrifice
  • At the last supper Jesus offered himself to the
Father under the appearance of bread and wine
  • He changed the bread and wine into his body and
    blood with these words
  • This is my bodyThis is my blood
  • It was in this way that the perfect victim was
    being offered.

7
The Words of the Last Supper
  • The words
  • is given for youis poured out for you.
  • Tell us two important things
  • That Jesus is offering a sacrifice to God for our
    sakes.
  • The Sacrifice of the Eucharist is connected to
that of His Crucifixion, which happened the next
    day.

8
The Crucifixion
  • The Crucifixion was the same sacrifice offered by
Jesus to the Father as the Last Supper
  • Jesus was again the priest and victim, but this
time it was a bloody, painful offering.
  • By his death, which Jesus offered for us, the one
true sacrifice for sin was finally given to God.
  • Unlike animal sacrifices, this one actually
    worked, once for all.
  • It made up for every sin and reconciled us to the
    Father!

9
How can we be sure?
  • When Jesus rose from the dead on the third day it
gave us surety that God had accepted that
    sacrifice
  • God was so pleased with his Son that
  • God exalted him to the highest place and gave him
the name that is above every name, that at the
name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven
and on earth and under the earth, and every
tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the
    glory of God the Father.
  • Jesus was freed from the grip of death as the
sign that we, too, are freed from death and its
    cause sin.

10
Sharing in the SacrificeSharing in the Grace
  • The Sacrifice of Jesus that was offered for us
but it is not forced on us!
  • The free will that God gave us is will never be
    taken away
  • Even though Jesus died to free us from sin and
death we must still choose to accept the
sacrifice, accept the grace, and choose to love
    God
  • We can just as easily choose sin instead

11
The Sorrow in the Garden
  • This is a major reason that Jesus was so
distressed the night before he died.
  • Jesus knew that though He would pay the price to
save us, give up everything for us, suffer and
die, many people would simply ignore that
sacrifice and choose sin and never a choose to
give God love, thanks, or praise.
  • Jesus knew that countless people would choose
    eternal death anyway.
  • Heaven and Eternal life are offered to us, we
have to choose to accept the grace offered to us
and return our love for God.

12
The Sacraments Grace Freely Given
  • We first accept Gods grace in Baptism.
  • Baptism immediately accepts Christs sacrifice
and therefore frees us from all sin.
  • So long as we live we can always choose and
    change our minds
  • If we choose sin again to rule our lives we can
    block the grace of Baptism
  • This type of sin is called mortal sin, it is
called mortal because it leads to eternal death,
    Hell
  • Mortal Sin rejects Jesus sacrifice and Gods
    love for selfishness
  • For example doing illegal drugs is a mortal sin,
you are rejecting Gods love to selfishly give
    yourself a high

13
The Time of Choosing
  • So long as we are alive, we can choose or reject
    God and Christs sacrifice.
  • Once we die we will be immediately judged on our
last living choice of accepting or rejecting God.
  • If we sin after our Baptism, especially mortal
sin, we can re-choose Gods sacrifice and grace
by going to the Sacrament of Confession.
  • We do this by naming our offenses and the things
we chose above God and then rejecting them with
    an Act of Contrition.
  • When the priest gives you absolution your sins
    are all forgiven.

14
State of Grace
  • When we live accepting Christs sacrifice and
forgiveness, by living with no un-confessed sins,
we live in a State of Grace
  • If we die in a State of Grace we will gain
eternal life, receive the inheritance of Heaven,
and share in the glory of the saints.

15
To Give is to Receive
  • The more we share Gods love with others, the
more of Gods love we can receive
  • The more we sin, even if we receive forgiveness,
the less we will be able to receive
  • God pours himself out completely upon us, he
gives us as much as we can hold
  • The more we learn to give, the more we will be
able to hold for eternal life.
