Title: Species concepts

1
Species concepts
  • Classical (morphological) species concept
  • Populations that are morphological similar and
    that differ morphologically from other
    populations, form a species.
  • Advantages Fast, inexpensive, easy to use.
  • Disadvantages Subjective, hybridization causes
    problems, only use morphology.
  • Biological species concept
  • Species are population that can interbreed
randomly but that are reproductively isolated
    from other populations.
  • Advantages Objective.
  • Disadvantages Hybridization makes it time
consuming, hybridization is not uniformly, cannot
be used with large groups, cannot be done with
    agamic or polyploid groups.

Species concepts
  • Evolutionary species concept
  • A species is a parent-offspring lineage where the
offspring differs evolutionary from the parents.
  • Advantages May use any type of data, relative
    objective.
  • Disadvantages Computer based, type of data
should be selected carefully, depending on the
type of data used, it may become time consuming.
  • Genomic species concept
  • A species contains certain genomes, although the
number and ration of these genomes may differ
    between different individuals.
  • Advantages Best method, objective.
  • Disadvantages The most time consuming method,
hybridization can cause problems with the
    interpretation.
