Thesis Statement
  • The United States involvement in the Philippines
was not only for protection for the natives and
free them from Spain, but was also based on
democratic principles, as well as economic ties.

5
Establishment for democratic government
  • On January 20, 1899, President Mckinley appointed
the 1st Philippine Commission The commissioners
investigate the conditions in the islands and
    make recommendations.
  • On March 16, 1900, Mckinley appointed the 2nd
Philippine Commission. A judicial system was
established, including a Supreme Court. A civil
service and police force was also organized.

Establishment for democratic government
  • Reform education and a system of free public
    elementary schools. The U. S. imported 540
teachers to the Philippines to educate the
Filipinos. In 1903, the U.S. also established
schools that taught a non-Muslim curriculum in
Moro Province Mindanao (in the south).
  • English was declared the official language during
the U.S. occupation. The English requirement
barred many political offices and ensured a
    dependency on American administrators.

7
Establishment for democratic government
  • In 1902, Philippine Organic Act disestablished
the Catholic Church as the state religion, and a
considerate amount of church land was purchased
    and redistributed.
  • Public infrastructure which include
  • -railroads and highways
  • -improve harbor facilities
  • -open greater markets for Philippine goods
through the lowering or elimination of taxes.
  • -stimulate foreign investment in mining,
    forestry, and cash-crop cultivation.

8
Designing economic policies to promote the
islands development
  • In the mid-nineteenth century, a Filipino
landowning elite developed on the basis of abaca
(Manila hemp), sugar, coconut oil, and tobacco.

9
Imperialism Washingtons gamble for a new Middle
East
  • That the war will deliver democracy to the whole
    Arab world.
  • Replacement of the regimes that the U.S.
    dislikes.
  • The burden of U.S. imperialism it means
laying down the rules America wants (on
everything from markets to weapons of mass
    destructions).
