Introduction
  • First Space excursion
  • Space war with soviets
  • Landing on the moon
  • Apollo 13

3
First space excursion
  • In the mid 1950s the Soviets, successfully
launched the first artificial satellite, Sputnik
    1, into orbit.
  • Then in the early 1960s the Soviets we
victorious again and sent a human into space.

4
Space war with Soviets
  • The United Sates embarked on an accelerated
scientific journey, containing a series of
technological obstacles, in order to over take
    the Soviets.
  • In the 1960s the Soviets were again successful
after they sent the first human into space.
  • A few months later the united states responded
    by Project Mercury and Gemini.
  • The united states felt the soviets were still
ahead of them. So the Kennedy administration
challenged NASA to land a man on the moon before
    the close of the decade.

5
Landing on the Moon
  • Millions of viewers were glued to their
    televisions.
  • As the Apollo 11 mission created another
significant entry for our historical journals.
  • Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became
the first men to take a walk on the Moon--the
United Sates had won the race.

6
Apollo 13
  • The problems of Apollo 13 added to public
uncertainty with the program, although before the
mission was aborted because of an explosion
onboard, Apollo 13, was barely noticed by the
    public.
  • NASA tended to downplay the problems it had with
Apollo 13, so the public was never really fully
informed about the dangers that existed for the
    crew.

7
Conclusion
  • The Soviets were the first to get something into
    space.
  • Then there was a space war.
  • Then we won the war by sending the first person
    to walk on the moon.
