ABOUT MAHARASHTRA MARITIME BOARD
  • Minor ports controlled by
  • Central Customs till 1963
  • State Public Works Department 1963 to 1990
  • Water Transport Commissioner 1990 to 1996
  • MMB constituted in 1996. Commissioner, Water
    Transport re-designated as CEO
  • 13 Member Board under Chairmanship of Hon.
    Minister (Ports)
  • MMB carries out, both regulatory and
    developmental functions.
  • Development Management of Minor Ports, Inland
    Water Transport (IWT) Passenger Water Transport
    (PWT)
  • Handles 11 Million Tonnes of cargo annually.
    Likely to increase to 275 Million Tonnes as our
    ports get commissioned.
  • Handles 1.55 crores passengers annually
  • Registration of fishing vessels (59613 up to
    June-2009)
  • Registration of Inland Vessels (1872 up to
    June-2009)
  • Hydrographic Surveys of ports, creeks rivers

  • Create an investment friendly environment and
    policy framework to bring about integrated
    coastline development in Maharashtra
  • OBJECTIVES
  • Provide committed support by framing policies
    that optimise benefits for all stakeholders
  • Ensure that investors get an environment
    conducive to their business development
  • Explore multiple ways of utilizing the coastal
    front of the state by encouraging a wide range of
    marine-related activities.
  • Create adequate facilities in the areas of ports,
    shipyards, inland water transport system and
    other coastal industrial services.

Coastline- Salient Features
  • 720 kms. in length i.e. 10 of countrys
    coastline
  • 48 out of 185 notified minor ports in the country
  • 35 no. of creeks having potential navigable
    channel
  • National Highway No. 17 runs parallel to the
    coastline at an average distance of 50 kms. from
    the coast
  • Konkan railway runs parallel to the southern
    coastal belt
