Title: THE IMPORTANCE OF WORSHIP

1
THE IMPORTANCE OF WORSHIP
2
GOD IS THE ONLY ONEWE ARE TO WORSHIP
  • Devil - All these things I will give You if You
will fall down and worship me." (Mt. 49)
  • Jesus - "Away with you, Satan! For it is
written, 'You shall worship the LORD your God,
and Him only you shall serve.'"

3
WE CAN WORSHIP GODIN ONE WAY ONLY
  • John 424, "God is Spirit, and those who worship
Him must worship in spirit and truth."
  • must worship shows that this is the only way
that we can worship God acceptably.

4
5 KINDS OF WORSHIP
  • VAIN WORSHIP
  • Matthew 157-9, "Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah
prophesy about you, saying 'These people draw
near to Me with their mouth, and honor Me with
their lips, but their heart is far from Me. And
in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines
    the commandments of men.'
  • Vain useless, empty, groundless, invalid.

5
VAIN WORSHIP
  • Vain Worship consisted of
  • Drawing near to God with their mouth.
  • Honoring God with their lips.
  • But their heart far from God.
  • Taught as doctrines the commandments of men.
  • Does vain worship not take place today?
  • This is why it is important
  • TO FOLLOW THE NEW TESTAMENT!

6
5 KINDS OF WORSHIP
  • Vain worship.
  • IGNORANT WORSHIP
  • Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his
spirit was provoked within him when he saw that
the city was given over to idols. (Acts 176)

7
IGNORANT WORSHIP
  • Acts 1717-21 Therefore he reasoned in the
synagogue with the Jews and with the Gentile
worshipers, and in the marketplace daily with
those who happened to be there. Then certain
Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him.
And some said, "What does this babbler want to
say?" Others said, "He seems to be a proclaimer
of foreign gods," because he preached to them
    Jesus and the resurrection.

8
IGNORANT WORSHIP
  • And they took him and brought him to the
Areopagus, saying, "May we know what this new
doctrine is of which you speak? For you are
bringing some strange things to our ears.
Therefore we want to know what these things
mean." For all the Athenians and the foreigners
who were there spent their time in nothing else
but either to tell or to hear some new thing.

9
IGNORANT WORSHIP
  • New Things
  • New Testament worship is just not exciting
    enough.
  • Suggest we make it more meaningful, more
    spiritual, more contemporary.
  • We need dynamic speakers, praise groups,
    dancing, dramatic presentations, entertainment,
    Christian rock bands

10
IGNORANT WORSHIP
  • I just dont get anything out of worshipits
    boring
  • The problem is not with the worship that God has
    set forth in His word.
  • The problem is with the person making the
    statement.
  • WE ARE HERE TO WORSHIP GOD!
  • Not here to please ourselves
  • Not here to be entertained
  • Not here to get on an emotional high

11
IGNORANT WORSHIP
  • Then Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and
said, "Men of Athens, I perceive that in all
things you are very religious for as I was
passing through and considering the objects of
your worship, I even found an altar with this
inscription TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, the
One whom you worship without knowing, Him I
    proclaim to you (Acts 1722-23).

12
IGNORANT WORSHIP
  • No justification for ignorant worship
  • Acts 1730-31 "Truly, these times of ignorance
God overlooked, but now commands all men
everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a
day on which He will judge the world in
righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He
has given assurance of this to all by raising Him
    from the dead.
  • All we need to do is take our New Testaments, see
what God teaches therein and follow that.

13
5 KINDS OF WORSHIP
  • Vain worship.
  • Ignorant worship.
  • SELF-IMPOSED WORSHIP

14
SELF-IMPOSED WORSHIP
  • Colossians 220-23 Therefore, if you died with
Christ from the basic principles of the world,
why, as though living in the world, do you
subject yourselves to regulations "Do not touch,
do not taste, do not handle," which all concern
things which perish with the using according to
the commandments and doctrines of men? These
things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in
    self-imposed religion, false humility, and
neglect of the body, but are of no value against
    the indulgence of the flesh.

15
SELF-IMPOSED WORSHIP
  • Self-imposed religion
  • Voluntary worship, worship in which one goes
beyond what God requires without any particular
    command. (Complete Word Study Dictionary).
  • DOES GOD AUTHORIZE IT IN HIS WORD?

16
5 KINDS OF WORSHIP
  • Vain worship.
  • Ignorant worship.
  • Self-imposed worship.
  • MOCK WORSHIP

17
MOCK WORSHIP
  • Mark 1519-20 Then they struck Him on the head
with a reed and spat on Him and bowing the knee,
they worshiped Him. And when they had mocked Him,
they took the purple off Him, put His own clothes
on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him.

18
MOCK WORSHIP
  • When you worship God any way you see fit you mock
    Christ.
  • When your heart is not in your worship you mock
    Christ.
  • crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and
put Him to an open shame. (Hebrews 66)
  • Our worship must be with a pure heart and
    sincerity of purpose.
  • Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of
my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my
strength and my Redeemer (Psalm 1914).
