Background Objectives

• The primary objectives of the survey are
• To monitor the extent of Open Source software
  adoption by companies in Hong Kong
• To understand the problems, benefits, concerns,
  future plans supports required for Open Source
  software adoption
• To provide crucial information for deriving Open
  Source software promotion strategies

Definition of Open Source Software

• Open Source Software is defined as a free
  software program that grants users with freedom
  to use, modify, and redistribute the code of the
  software.

Stages of Open Source Deployment

• No knowledge, not aware
• Aware of the software, some knowledge, but no
  adoption or plan to adopt Open Source
• Prepare to go for Open Source
• Staff training, acquired the software, trial run
  of the software

• 3,933 telephone interviews with establishments
  using probability sampling method
• Focus group discussion telephone interviews
  with 81 professional users
• Supply Side Survey
• Face-to-face interviews with 20 trade
  associations key suppliers/ application
  developers
