an ethical obligation for the individual medical

8 Current Situation of European CME
- Continuing medical education (CME) systems are
already in place in many european countries - Some countries approach the implementation of a
CME system - National accreditation authorities are
established by the medical profession or as
governmental bodies - Europe is slowly striving towards obligatory CME
systems - (free movement of MDs and patients within the EU,
- pressure from nat. authorities,
- health insurance companies etc.)
9European CME Why do we need it?
- European CME is needed for the accreditation of
any CME-Event/Product in Medicine at the European
level - Need for Harmonisation
- European CME must be independent from Providers,
Societies (National, ESC, Universities,.....),
Industry (Pharma. Ind., med.-tech. Ind.) - Need for an Independent Accreditor

13European CME How Should the Accreditation Work ?
NAAs
14European CME How Should the EACCME Work ?
- Develop a Review or Governance Board (proposed
by the Task Force). - Regulate CME at the European level.
- Establish a general template for European CME
accreditation. - Supervise the accreditation performed by
Sections Boards (quality control,
independence). - Support those Sections Boards that need
assistance. - Communicate on a regular basis with the NAAs.
- Report on a regular basis to the UEMS Executive.
15European CME What Should be Accredited ?
- Scientific/Educational events.
- Distance learning products (CD-ROMs,
internet-based CME programmes, case-based
learning). - CME articles.
- Textbooks.
- Virtual reality CME.
16European CME How should it work ?
- Deal with international accreditation only.
- Use of international languages (other than
English) should be allowed. - Satellite symposia from industry must not be
accredited. - Monitors should be sent to some meetings.
- Report forms should be collected and analysed.
17European CME Future Perspectives
- Increase the number of applications.
- Accreditation of new forms of CME.
- More involvement of the NAAs.
- Further develop EACCME as a global accreditation
organisation. - Continue to respond to the needs of the
profession.

20European Individual Certification How Should it
Work ?
21 Current Situation of European Certification
- Certification systems are already in place in
many european countries. - Some countries approach the implementation of a
certification system - Some specialties/subpecialties are already
running european exams (without coordination and
without a common framework). - Europe is slowly striving towards obligatory
certification and maybe even re-certification - (free movement of MDs and patients within the
EU, - pressure from nat. authorities,
- health insurance companies etc.)
22European Certification How Should the ECCIS Work
?
- Develop a Review or Governance Board similar to
what was proposed to EACCME. - Regulate the certification at the European
level. - Establish a general template for the European
Certification for all specialties/subspecialties. - Supervise the certification performed by
Sections Boards (quality control). - Support those Sections Boards that need
assistance. - Communicate on a regular basis with the NAAs.
- Report on a regular basis to the UEMS Executive.
23European Certification What Should be Certified ?
- European Educational Programmes of
Specialists/Subspecialist in training (ends with
a Certification).
24European Certification How Should it Work?
Applicant applies on-line, provides requested
documentation (i.e. licences, diplomas) and
proceeds with the 3 assessments

26European Certification What Should be Certified
in the Future?
- European Educational Programmes of Specialists/
subpecialists in training (ends with a
Certification). - Certification of training centers/trainers
(visits). - Certification of pre-existing specialists/subspec
ialists (European exam? Grandparent rule?). - Re-certification of individual
specialists/subspecialist with EACCME/SectionsBoa
rds credits every 5 years.
27European Accreditation and Certification What
Should we do in the Future?
- It is better for the profession not to do
anything and keep things like they are today

29European Accreditation and Certification What
Should we do in the Future?
- It is better for the profession not to do
anything and keep things like they are today - But then
- We have to be aware of the possibility that
others will regulate everything for us
