Title: Realistic Rendering of Plant Leaves

1
Realistic Rendering of Plant Leaves
  • COMP 236 Final Project
  • Suddha Kalyan Basu
  • May 9, 2006

2
Motivation
  • Plant leaves are composed of semi-transparent-tiss
    ues.
  • Exhibit sub-surface scattering.
  • Plain texture-mapping doesnt look realistic.

3
Modeling Plant Leaves
  • Modeled as thin shells
  • Thin shells are different from general deformable
objects like cloth, etc., as they have a
    undeformed curved shape.
  • Energy of deformed leaf surfaces is modeled as a
combination of flexural and membrane energies.

4
Deformation of Leaves
  • Bending forces help to preserve the overall
    shape.
  • Membrane forces help to preserve the areas of
    triangulated tiles.

5
Rendering Plant Leaves
  • Properties
  • Translucency
  • Varying BRDF
  • Glossiness
  • Subsurface
  • scattering
  • (hard to model).

7
BRDF
  • Varying BRDF is difficult to model for each leaf.
  • Used the Henyey-Greenstein scattering model.

Future Work
  • Rendering model should be combined with a more
    elaborate geometric model of leaves.
  • Real-time rendering of leaves.
  • A more generalized model for a larger variety of
leaves (hairy plants, conifers, etc.) .
